High Five! from Neil Nathan

My Santa Claus Is Coming to Town Charity Video, which I’m using to raise funds for the Fred Gabler Helping Hand Camp Fund, is based on a true story from my childhood where I got busted by my folks when I opened my presents early.

The following are my top five presents worth getting kidnapped by Evil Santa and his elves this year:

1. ThunderCats - Season 1. Give Me Sight Beyond Sight!

2. The Beatles - Mono Collection. This can’t come out on vinyl fast enough!

3. Vintage Tube Record Player to enjoy the aforementioned gift in its proper warmth.

4. Gibson ES 339 Hollow Body which will allow me to rip off John Lennon’s sound.

5. But all I really want for Christmas is a lifetime supply of Fluevog Shoes!

Neil Nathan Celebrates a Successful Year with Birthday Extravaganza Show at Rockwood Music Hall January 14th

It’s been a fabulous year for Neil Nathan: he’s garnered comparisons to Cat Stevens, Jeff Tweedy, and Matthew Sweet for his debut LP, The Distance Calls. Toss in Rosario Dawson guest starring in his “California Run” video and it’s a sure bet that Nathan is one guy not complaining about being a year older. That’s why he’s celebrating with a big birthday show at the Rockwood Music Hall on January 14th.

Nathan has also been sharing his love of music videos by making a wide array of them this year. The “California Run” featuring Rosario Dawson and “When The Rain Falls” parallel videos; his Grindhouse/B Movie Inspired Album Trailer, the “So Much More” Get Out and Vote Video, a Dia De Los Muertos inspired Halloween video for his cover of Beethoven's Fur Elise, and most recently, a Christmas Charity video featuring a Santa Claus straight out of a David Lynch flick. His cover of ELO’s “Do Ya,” which was also featured on the Californication soundtrack, has been viewed 25,000 times on YouTube. Next up is the “Highways” video featuring an animated version of himself driving a flying ‘67 Corvette convertible; “Highways,” along with “California Run,” “When The Rain Falls,” “So Much More,” and “Do Ya” can be found on Nathan’s latest full-length, The Distance Calls which was released in August.

Santa Claus Meets David Lynch While Raising Money for Kids' Camp Fund

Yes, it's Black Friday, the first denizen of Christmas consumerism. But before you rush out to battle the shopping hoards for whatever the current version of Tickle-Me-Elmo is, take a moment to enjoy a dose of real holiday cheer, a darkly comic video made for a good cause.

Neil Nathan likes to get into the spirit of Christmas, with a twist. His sweet, folky version of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” is accompanied by a darkly comic video, written and directed by Zev Deans (The Yes Men Survivaball video),featuring a scary David Lynch style Santa Claus, who does not take kindly to little boys opening their presents early. It’s all in good fun and for a good cause. Nathan is using the video to spread the word about The Fred Gabler Helping Hand Camp Fund, which sends underprivileged youth to summer camp.

In this kitschy video for Neil Nathan's folky lullaby version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”, Nathan plays a little boy in footed pajamas that opens his Christmas presents early and is busted and whisked away by a very scary Santa and his Elves, who show up in vehicle ominously marked with the letters, E.L.F. Nathan is using the video to raise money for The Fred Gabler Helping Hand Camp Fund, a charity started by the family of his lifelong friend who passed away in the World Trade Center on 9/11. The charity helps send underprivileged youth to summer camp. Nathan wrote a song in honor of Gabler, “Freddy’s Song” as well as put on a benefit for his friend at the Living Room which was featured on the New York Post’s Page Six. ESPN, Rosario Dawson and CMJ are on the “California Run”

Starting today, you can have Neil Nathan’s “California Run” video in one of three flavors: Original recipe, featuring Rosario Dawson, co-star of the upcoming Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine; Light Acoustic version, filmed at Riley McMahon's New Warsaw Studio at Brooklyn Fireproof in East Williamsburg for a Playtime! Session during CMJ; or Sporty edition, where the song was featured on ESPN. All three videos can be viewed at http://neilnathan.com/videos.


The original “California Run” video was filmed in Topanga Canyon and features Nathan’s former roommate, and co-star of Unstoppable, Rosario Dawson. Hip Video Promo (She & Him, Black Mountain, Pearl Jam) spread the word for Nathan and loved the song so much, they recently had him play their 10th Anniversary CMJ Party at Maxwell’s. Nathan played two gigs during CMJ, the other at Knitting Factory, where he was joined by Riley McMahon, who also joins him in the Playtime! Session video on mandolin.

Neil Nathan is no stranger to making music videos. Next up is “Highways” featuring an animated version of himself driving a flying ‘67 Corvette convertible. It was directed by Postage, Inc.. His cover of ELO’s “Do Ya,” which was also featured on the Californication soundtrack, has been viewed 20,000 times on YouTube. “Highways,” along with “California Run” and “Do Ya” can be found on Nathan’s latest full-length, The Distance Calls which was released in August.

The Distance Calls was produced by The Go’s Bobby Harlow and combines the talents of Dean Fertita (The Dead Weather, QOTSA), Kenny Tudrick and Joey Mazzola (Detroit Cobras), John Krautner (The Go), and Ross Westerbur (Deadstring Brothers). The album effortlessly merges jangly pop rock with Nathan’s mellower singer/songwriter side. Get Out and Vote! Says Neil Nathan with Inspiring “So Much More” Video

Neil Nathan, a former high school history teacher, may no longer work at New York’s Martin Luther King, Jr. High, but he’s still always looking for opportunities to inspire and educate. The upcoming Election Day is just one of those opportunities. “So Much More” was written for “the angels of American democracy” and is all about the power of individual citizens to bring about positive political change. The video is filled with inspiring images that make any viewer want to rock the vote. “So Much More” can be found on his debut LP, The Distance Calls.

Nathan was featured on the cover of American Teacher magazine for directing Martin Luther King, Jr. High School’s Arts Education program and providing inner city kids with opportunities to intern and attend performances at New York City Opera, Guggenheim Museum, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. His favorite teachers turned rockers are Gene Simmons and Bob Pollard.

Neil Nathan’s Reinterpretation Of Beethoven’s “Fur Elise” Gets Dia De Los Muertos Video Treatment

Just in time for Halloween and The Day of the Dead, Neil Nathan debuts the video for “Darling Friend,” his lap steel infused re-interpretation of Ludwig Von Beethoven's "Fur Elise." In it, Nathan, bedecked in a Beethoven meets T Rex composer jacket serenades the coffin of his lost love while surrounded by a twirling, ghoulish dance troupe. “Darling Friend” is directed by Vaj Potenza (My Brightest Diamond's "Freak Out Gold Chains Remix") and choreographed by Suzanne Rydz. Vaj also co- directed two of Nathan's latest videos, "California Run" and "When The Rain Falls." The song is the second single off Neil's covers EP, Songsmiths, which was produced by long time steel collaborator Mike 'Slo-Mo' Brenner (Slo-Mo, Marah, Jason Molina).

Spotlight: Reno Bo

Reno Bo's Big Star-influenced pop rock is not what you'd normally expect from a Nashville singer/songwriter. He came to my attention thanks to two other power-pop musicians I know (one of them being GLG's Neil Nathan). And I couldn't be happier about this new discovery. I'm almost ashamed I wasn't already on board. Reno Bo's latest album Happenings and Other Things is a nod to classic rock done with power-pop sweetness. Todd Rundgren with fuzzed guitars, a Brendan Benson from the 1970s. R.I.Y.L. Sloan, Neil Nathan, Paul McCartney, Emitt Rhodes, Rooney, etc. etc. So good! Enjoy the adorable and cool video for the album's single "There's a Light."

Neil Nathan's Old Roomie Rosario Dawson Guest Stars in His New Video

Being friends with a movie star certainly has its benefits. Neil Nathan, New York folk-tinged rocker and former roommate of Rosario Dawson (Harmony Korine’s Kids, Men in Black II, Sin City, Grindhouse, etc.) is lucky enough to have his friend appear in his latest music video, “California Run”, which was directed by Ric Serena and Vaj Potenza. The video can now be seen on Dawson’s official site, http://rosario-dawson.net.

Nathan says, “It was such a treat to catch up in between takes. Rosario always inspires. She made me look good when she visited my classroom (Nathan’s a former NYC high school history teacher) and now she’s doing the same on screen.”

Dawson was also excited to work with her old friend on “California Run,” “I'm so happy to support him and it was a blast to hang, sing and ride together in Topanga Canyon.” Clearly a fan of the man and the music, she says, “I wake up with ‘When The Rain Falls’ and ‘California Run’ playing through my head constantly so I'm glad to have the excuse of being in one of the videos.” The video, which features Nathan hitchhiking his way to his lost love, has Dawson picking him up and bringing him one step closer to the girl of his dreams.




“California Run” is on Neil Nathan’s latest LP, The Distance Calls which is due out August 24th. The album was produced by The Go’s Bobby Harlow at Tempermill Studios and features some of Detroit’s finest musicians: Dean Fertita (The Dead Weather, QOTSA), Kenny Tudrick and Joey Mazzola (Detroit Cobras), John Krautner (The Go), and Ross Westerbur (Deadstring Brothers).
