Echo Orbiter Celebrate Record Release with First Live Show in Nine Years

It's been nine years since Echo Orbiter ran with the Elephant 6 gang, so we are proud to announce the band's first show in nine years!

There’s nothing like recording and releasing a new album to get the mysterious Echo Orbiter back on stage. The Philadelphia neo-psychedelic group will be taking the stage at Johnny Brenda’s (one of the ultimate and intimate clubs to play in) in Philadelphia on September 18th for their first show since 2001 to celebrate the release of their latest album, Euphonicmontage. The album, due out September 28th is a sonic montage of fuzzed up guitars, sounds that come out of left field and unexpected breakdowns. Echo Orbiter will be playing a set that features tracks from their fifteen-year career played by the original line-up: Justin Emerle (guitar), Colin Emerle (bass), and Jeremiah Steffen (drums). Joe Jack Talcum of The Dead Milkmen will be on the bill to support the band on this epic occasion.



This is a truly momentous performance. Echo Orbiter, it seemed had played its last live show in 2001. But, now, nine years later, the suggestion to play live again was all it took to get the ball rolling. “When the idea for the show was presented, I was actually surprised how quickly Colin and I decided to give it a shot”, says Justin Emerle. “It began as a small five-song set with just the two of us with acoustic guitars; it quickly evolved into a full blown live set with our original drummer getting back on board and a couple of friends helping out with other guitars and keyboards and such." A band who has been focusing on the studio for nearly ten years is likely to rack up quite a catalog, which can make choosing a set list a challenge, "It's going to be fun to play again,” says Colin Emerle, “We used to have about 30 songs to choose from back in the day, now we have over 400 to choose from. It's been fun just to go over the tracks to choose what to actually play live."

Favorite Friday with Echo Orbiter: Underrated Albums By Olivia Tremor Control and Van Dyke Parks

Echo Orbiter's Justin Emerle is the kind of guy who can get lost in an album when he listens to it. A physical response or a memory trigger goes off when he hears one of his favorite albums of all time or brand new bands like Avi Buffalo. It makes sense then that one can easily turn off the outside world when listening to Echo Orbiter's upcoming LP Euphonicmontage. Here Justin describes why he honors each album, and if you haven't already, making you want to hear them all yourself.

Echo Orbiter's Favorite Albums of the Week

Dinosaur Jr., Bug
The juvenile Dinosaurs at their best. Cleaner production than You're Living All Over Me and a final scathing statement just prior to their signing with Reprise. "No Bones" stands as J's finest moment in songwriting and sonic shock.

Sonic Youth, Daydream Nation
As a child, Daydream Nation stepped into my innocent life and shook me violently until I professed aloud that Van Halen wasn't so much "the shit." Not my favorite SY record, but a nostalgic emergence nonetheless as I walk along trails in the woods of South Jersey in 2010 as an adult.

Minutemen, Double Nickels on the Dime
D. Boon and Mike Watt are still, today, among the most influential musicians in the annals of underground/indie/punk/hardcore/blah, blah, blah, rock. Minutemen defy genre anyway and Double Nickels on the Dime breaks ground, that none have yet to fix, through all 43 tracks of their masterpiece.

Avi Buffalo, Avi Buffalo
I got the 45 earlier this year and loved the A-side. This was a record I was actually anticipating and was more than pleased. I admire anyone with the apparent knowledge of pop structure and chord phrasings, especially a kid fresh out of high school. Somehow, "Where's Your Dirty Mind" reminds me of a song that the Peanuts would sing on a holiday special, and who wouldn't love that?

Beach Fossils, Beach Fossils
Sunny pop about summer, beaches, and teenagers written in the most basic of forms is all the bee's knee's right now and Beach Fossils are at the forefront of that movement. Every song tends to sound a bit similar to my schizophrenic ears, but there are two tracks that stand out; "Golden Age" and "Wide Awake."

Best Coast, Crazy for You
I loved their previous 45s and the grainy, lo-fi summer/sunny pop that they wrote about beaches and the sun. Their debut record is sadly a bit more polished, which is all good aside from the fact that I was hoping to see how their sound would hold up on a long player. I only listened once as I was watching an army of cicadas emerge from their 17-year slumber at 3:00 AM. I do remember "When the Sun Don't Shine" was playing while one particular cicada emerged from its cocoon and I'll now forever see that in my brain when I hear that track.

Black Moth Super Rainbow, Falling Through a Field
Simply one of the best bands around today. I love the '70s and the way the sun shone differently back then as a toddler and Black Moth perfectly evoke the energy of any vague memories of the end of that decade. I particularly like this record of theirs because of its relative rawness and simplicity.

Olivia Tremor Control, Black Foliage: Animation Music
In my opinion, the most underrated record ever recorded, with the possible exception of all of my own records... This is audio art in its highest form. OTC obviously approached this record as they would a canvas and applied sound in strokes like paint from a brush. More proof that great art usually goes generally unnoticed.

Woods, At Echo Lake
Spending time alone in the woods, in fields, or along bodies of water is a favorite past time of mine, and Woods were specifically formed with the sole intention of occupying my iPod for convenient listening as I get lost in the wilderness. "Suffering Season" is a tree bark's width behind "The Number" in the race for all-time best Woods song

Van Dyke Parks, Song Cycle
Actually, this may be the most underrated record of all time. I think about 250 people have ever really heard this record. Van Dyke Parks is best known as Brian Wilson's collaborator on the doomed SMiLE LP, and he proved just what a musical force and visionary he is in his own right with Song Cycle; recorded on the heels of SMiLE's demise. Parks utilizes six or seven lifetimes of music knowledge to craft a record that's steeped in history and complicated music theory, all the while dripping in excitement.

Echo Orbiter Hand Selected by R. Stevie Moore for Tribute Box Set

Self-recording, indie demi-god R. Stevie Moore has joined forces with online magazine Sick of the Radio to release an on-going series of tribute compilations to Moore’s 40+ year career. The cult icon became well known for recording his own music and self-releasing his own material since the early 1970s. He continues to do so today, which is a true do-it-yourself dedication that many of today's musicians admire.

The second volume of the tribute compilation, New Wave Moons, available for download now, features a track by Philly’s neo-psychedelic duo, Echo Orbiter. The track, a cover of Moore’s “I Hope That You Remember” is a clangy, boingy sound collage that honors the original, but definitely has Echo Orbiter’s signature stamped all over it. Contemporary indie and power-pop icon, Jason Falkner also appears on Vol.2, taking on Moore's "Play Myself Some Music."



“I Hope That You Remember,” was hand-picked, along with all of the other exclusive cover songs on this compilation, by R. Stevie Moore himself. In fact, Moore liked the Echo Orbiter track so much that he bumped it up the queue from volume 4. It’s no surprise that Moore digs Echo Orbiter; the Emerle brothers’ latest release, Euphonicmontage (out September 28th), was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Justin Emerle himself in his home recording studio. Experimental Indie Rockers Echo Orbiter Release Euphonicmontage

Echo Orbiter cites Picasso, Ayn Rand and The Flaming Lips as influences. With this sort of input, the output is guaranteed to be intriguing. Brothers Justin and Colin Emerle have created, with their latest full-length, Euphonicmontage, an album that is as close to cubist as you can get with sound. The neo-psychedelic "collage" is due out September 28th. Musical sounds that come out of left field, fuzzed up guitars, and unexpected breakdowns that sound like gears and machines whirling out of control, are all assembled to form Echo Orbiter’s eccentric songs. Still, it's all solidly in indie rock territory.

The brothers first formed the band back in 1996, finding themselves creating music in the era and influence of Elephant 6. It was at this time that they worked with The Lilys, Kindercore Records, and shared a stage with the likes of Elf Power, Of Montreal, The Apples in Stereo and Olivia Tremor Control. The Elephant 6 spirit, which is all about independence and self-promotion, is clearly still alive in Echo Orbiter. Euphonicmontage was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Justin himself. "This record is a culmination of 15 years of experimenting with sounds, styles, structures, and arrangements and is a true leap for us, probably the biggest for us from one record to another," says Justin, "We've taken our ‘psychedelic’ and ‘artistic’ roots and completely integrated it into something truly original; that's something I'm personally proud of."



The songs that fly from Euphonicmontage were fashioned by first laying down the intricate assemblage of sounds,"...it was recorded in dozens of segments on several different recording machines and pieced together in post-production," says Justin, and then writing lyrics to match. While the song subjects are ripe with demented whimsy, “This Worm in Rigor Mortis,” for instance, it’s just as easy to get lost in the richly textured music. Covered with layers of rich sonic soundscapes, guitar effects and wonky synthesizers, Echo Orbiter has created an album they deem futuristic, but accessible.
