Daytrotter Session with Seafarer

 I have fallen in love with Seafarer. Their music is a mosaic of genres – rock, folk, psych, pop – that meshes perfectly to create such a riveting sound. Patrick Grzelewski, lead vocalist of the Chicago band, delivers the poetic lyrics in a gritty and almost raw fashion. This is a style I can dig. We can all relate to that feeling and need to shout out loud and by joining in with Grzelewski, you can do just that.

Recently releasing their EP Hidden Places on Jan. 18, Seafarer stopped in for a Daytrotter session to record four tracks. We highly recommend downloading the free mp3's from the session if you know what's good for you.

Gwyneth & Monko Release Full-Length Album on February 15th

Gwyneth and Monko are evolving. Their new record, Gwyneth & Monko, which was recorded at Old School Studio in Caspar, CA, will more accurately reflect what the duo sounds like live, which is somewhere between folky acoustic and indie rock. And it’s no wonder their new work sounds this way, as they’ve been on the road for most of 2010, taking weekends here and there to record. Guest artists Scott Southard on bass, Jimmy Gallagher on drums and Matt Cooper Borkenhagen on pedal steel and dobro, join Gwyneth and Monko on their self-titled album which will be released on February 15th, 2011.

This record exists in part because of a month of creative exploration. In July, Gwyneth Moreland and Michael Monko spent time honing new songs in a home recording studio. Those sketches came to life in Old School Studio and are filled with new elements: Moreland on banjo, Monko on fiddle and guest artists adding drums and bass. These additions allow Gwyneth and Monko to explore a different dynamic while still keeping the old-timey and Americana influences, songwriting style, Moreland’s vocal style and Monko’s intricate instrumentation.

In July, Gwyneth and Monko released their EP, Good Old Horse, which evokes a feeling of nostalgia rooted deep in classic country fundamentals. Their first release as a duo, it breathes gently with down-home roots and indie folk sensibilities. Gwyneth & Monko Announce Southeast Tour with Laura Meyer in November

From opposite sides of the continent, New York’s soulful folk rock poet Laura Meyer and the San Francisco Bay Area’s emerging indie-folk duo Gwyneth & Monko will be meeting up in the Southeast this November for a group of shows together.

At 26 years old, Laura Meyer has performed nearly 400 independent shows throughout the United States and Europe, including performances at the Telluride Bluegrass and Rocky Mountain Folks Festivals. While based in the Northeast, she is permanently on the road, connecting with audiences the old-fashioned way… live. This is where Meyer’s emotionally-driven performance thrives, igniting rooms and leaving listeners inspired, if not transformed.

With a voice that invokes Jenny Lewis’ solo work crossed with the intimate folk of Gillian Welch; Gwyneth & Monko evoke a feeling of nostalgia rooted deep in classic country fundamentals. Lyrics lace together fictional female characters, while the down-home style mirrors the musicians’ earnest lives stemming from their childhood into young adults and touring musicians. Featuring soulful vocals by Gwyneth with intricate instrumentation by Monko on both electric and acoustic guitars as well as mandolin, this energetic duo blends old timey folk sentiments with modern indie-folk sounds.

So far in 2010, road warriors Laura Meyer and Gwyneth & Monko have individually played over 90 shows, each with full upcoming fall tours spanning the entire United States.

Traveling the interstates, mountain passes and back roads of this vast country to share their music with the masses, it is no wonder that last spring they finally crossed paths and co-billed a show in the historically spiritual epicenter of Ojai, CA. The intimate show at The Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Ojai spawned a friendship between the artists based on a common love of travel and music and a mutual respect for each other’s lives on the road. Seven months after that fateful meeting in the dry hills of California, Laura Meyer and Gwyneth & Monko will meet up again, only this time in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee.

Music Monday: Aquarium Drunkard, A Taste of the Eclectic

Aquarium Drunkard features a barrage of eclectic sounds ranging from vintage garage, psych, folk, country, New Orleans funk, r&b, and soul. Based in Los Angeles, the man behind the scenes, Justin Gage, also runs the indie label, Autumn Tone Records and his eclectic tastes can be heard on the weekly, two hour, Aquarium Drunkard Show which air on Fridays from noon-2pm EST on SIRIUS/XM satellite radio’s XMU (channel 26) and XM radio (channel 43). And truth be told, this show has been known to scratch at my proverbial itch for French music a time or two.

Gage is also 1/4 of the Mondo Boys sound collage collective and authored the 2009 guide/travelogue Memphis And The Delta Blues Trail.

What can you find on Aquarium Drunkard? From vinyl giveaways like the one that occurred for Serge Gainsbourg & Jane Birkin’s Je T’aime…Moi, Non Plus to interviews with The National (High Violet happens to be one of our favorites of the year), Arcade Fire and The Love Language, the blog runs the gamut from genre to content, all the while staying true to it's eclectic nature. Gage also goes straight to the source with members of bands such as Portugal the Man, Josh Rouse, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and Lucero who have acted as guest contributors to the column entitled "Diversions".

1. How long has Aquarium Drunkard been operating?
Five & 1/2 years

2. What makes Aquarium Drunkard different from other websites?
The voice.

3. Do you think Aquarium Drunkard has a specific musical niche?
Anything with soul, anything you can feel.

4. What contemporary albums are you looking forward to coming out?
Light In The Attic Records reissue of Jim Sullivan’s 1969 album, U.F.O.

5. How does Aquarium Drunkard support independent music and what is important about doing so?
My label, Autumn Tone, has been in existence almost as long as AD. It's about as independent as it gets. We also put on shows, festivals, etc. in L.A. and across the U.S. While we have done (and still do) a number of Autumn Tone showcases the majority of what we do, event-wise, is through Aquarium Drunkard. The Mission of Burma and Thurston Moore shows were some early ones that were pretty special as I had been a fan of both for many years. As far as most memorable, I would say AD's WAVED OUT fest. We are gearing up for WAVED OUT II September 25th (with Dungen headlining) and I couldn't be more excited.

6. Do you think online publications are taking precedence over print magazine? What kind of effect do you think that has on bands.
For better or worse, yes. I still like a good rag, but it's becoming increasingly hard for them to keep up. The Internet loves its 'firsties.' Not saying that as a good thing either. It leaves less time for artists to work out the kinks before the spotlight finds them. Remember, the Beatles were around five or so years before any real success.

7. What blogs/publications do you read other than your own? I really like Soul Sides, Cold Splinters, Raven Sings the Blues and Rising Storm.

8. What has been your most definitive moment since you started Aquarium Drunkard ?
Just interacting with the readers. They are really great/inspiring/interesting. The back and forth between the readers and myself has yielded some amazing discoveries --- old, unreleased demos, live recordings and videos have all landed in my email address via like-minded readers over the years. At best the blog's post inspire conversation, debate and more in the readers.

9. If there is any musician/band you could interview (dead or alive) who would it be? It would probably be someone like Sam Phillips of Sun Records or some of the old Delta blues guys. The real primordial shit.

10. If you could be in any band (of all time), who would you rock with?
Something fun and way over the top. Led Zeppelin. Yeah, Zeppelin.

Gwyneth & Monko Continue Tour This Fall

Gwyneth & Monko will dish up more of their earnest, stripped-down folk when they continue their tour, this time zig-zagging through Montana, New Mexico, Iowa, and Illinois. The 15-date tour is in support of the group’s newly released EP, Good Old Horse, which was released July 20th. The duo has been touring the entire spring and summer, and are loving life on the road, so why not extend into the fall? The lovely band will hit both the West coast and the Midwest on this round. Keep an eye out for a show near you.

Call It Folk - The Dutchess and The Duke, Gwyneth & Monko

Thanks to the upcoming national release (July 20) of Good Old Horse from our favorite folk duo Gwyneth & Monko, we stumbled upon the blog Call It Folk - A Home for Good Songs and Ballads. And golly, do they follow through with indie and brand-spanking new bands that dip their toes into traditional mixed with contemporary folk pop. Featuring groups like Band of Horses, The Dutchess and The Duke to complete unknowns, a great feature of this site is that at the end of each "review" or feature of said band, they offer you a list of other artists you may be interested in after reading about said band.

An early review of Good Old Horse by Call it Folk had only great things to say about the beautiful duo.



"Their songs are all good, but they are varied, from lone and sparse ballads like "Pine Box Sailor," to more upbeat songs with full arrangements. Being a sucker for traditional-style storytelling, and vocal harmonies, I found myself weak at the knees listening for the first time to the lovely song "Pine Box Sailor." It's awash with imagery and longing, driven by it's waltz-like tempo and folksy, universal melody. Gwyneth's vocals and lyrics combine wonderfully in this sad lament. This song is from her solo album, but the killer harmony vocals are from Michael Monko. "Lexington Ballad" in the standout from the new EP. Great vocals from Moreland, with stellar mandolin lines from Monko. This is very good songwriting from a duo with lots of talent, and, we hope, at least a few more albums to come."
