High Five! from Enjoy Your Pumas' Josh Benoit

Guitarist Josh Benoit was kind enough to toss up a High Five! before hitting the stage with Enjoy Your Pumas for their Commonality CD release party at Winnipeg's Park Theatre on Sunday, January 30th. These are a few things he loves:

1) Oil of Oregano

For sinus colds... or spaghetti.

2) Louie

Written and created by the stand-up comedian Louis C.K., Louie is a show on the FX channel that makes observations about being a divorced, middle-aged, overweight father of two girls. I don't necessarily relate to Louie, but I think he's funny.

3) Four Tet's There Is Love In You

This album is a great instrumental, electro-pop album. Put it on in the background, put it on in the foreground, just don't put it on a curling iron burn. Unfortunately, it does nothing for burns.

4) Mexico

Not only is Mexico a beautiful, warm place, but it's also the number one vacation destination for Monarch butterflies! I wish I were there now.

5) Spike Jonze

When Spike Jonze is not controlling the body of John Malkovich with the mind of John Cusack, he's busy throwing paint and shooting confetti at the folks from LCD Soundsystem under the pretense of a "music video." Spike is a zany director and he seems like an alright dude.

To celebrate the end of the nine to five, a Green Light Go staff member or artist will leave you with their short list of favorite things, better known as the High Five!

Enjoy Your Pumas Release Video for “He Was A Fly”

Enjoy Your Pumas show off their personalities in their new music video for “He Was a Fly”. The playful video is filled with dreamy images, beautiful lighting and a cool retro feel. It shows the band on a journey toward a house where they find an idyllic place to play. The track can be found on Enjoy Your Pumas’ debut LP Commonality.

The video was directed by Steven Schwartz, who recently made headlines with his heart-warming and award-winning Christmas short “Santa Stops By”. Josh Benoit, Enjoy Your Pumas’ guitar player, who will graduate from film school this semester, produced “He Was a Fly”, which was filmed on two days about a month apart.

Enjoy Your Pumas Celebrate the Release of Commonality at The Park Theatre January 30th

Enjoy Your Pumas will take another step toward going worldwide when they release their debut album, Commonality. To celebrate the release, they’ll be at The Park Theatre on January 30^th, playing tracks off the hook-filled record and showing off their signature sound dichotomy: lilting and ethereal/aggressive and rhythmic .

Commonality is great hooks, layered guitars, a tight, poppy rhythm section and Rosie Blais’ strong diverse vocals, and is sure to remind listeners of Metric, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bloc Party. The album was recorded primarily at Private Ear Recording Studio in Winnipeg. Death Cab for Cutie, Matt Epp, and The Waking Eyes have all recorded there. Enjoy Your Pumas appreciated the relatively lengthy time they were allowed to spend recording (six days) and put it to good use. “Working on the band for five straight days was like a vacation. A working vacation. It was a pleasant taste of what music as a career would be like,” says Janzen. Josh Benoit felt the album reflected this time well spent, “It sounds like a band that has put time and thought into the execution of their music.”

Staff Infection: Waiting on a Theme

I'm usually so good with themes, but I can't really seem to find one here. Instead of tying it all together, maybe I'll just say a few words about each song.

Screaming Females - "I Don't Mind It" from Castle Talk

This band blew me away when I saw them live in August. Marissa Paternoster is the most no-holds-barred female singer I have ever seen live. She has no concern for the way she looks when she sings, and it makes her that much more magnetic.

Drunken Barn Dance - "Ain't No Weather Fouler" from Grey Buried

I've been hearing this song for probably close to three years now, and I never get tired of it. Which is a good thing, since part of being in a music video involves hearing the song over and over again. Yes, you guessed it! I'm in this video. Watch me shamble my way to stardom below.



Enjoy Your Pumas - "Weight of the Circles" from Commonality

Another great female singer heads this Winnipeg band. Serious Metric vibes going on here.

Counting Crows - "Einstein on the Beach (For an Eggman)" from DGC Rarities Vol. 1

This is an old favorite of mine. Probably my favorite Counting Crows song ever. One of those things that puts you in a time machine and sends you back to when you were 14 and music was the only thing that could make you happy.

The Beggars - "Sleepaway Camp" from Party to the People

This band, as you will see in the video, knows how to put on a live show. Steve, another magnetic lead singer, not only grabs your attention, he pushes it down to the floor where it sits, cross-legged, for the whole of their set. Which of course, leaves you to dance, shout and CHOP! along.




Pewter Cub - "Wallflower Mourner"

Full of synth, but not reliant on it, Pewter Cub's music is moody in the best way.


Bridges and Powerlines - "Mirabell" from Eve

I had the privilege to see B&P last night. Their music is not only fun to hear, but fun to see as well! They're on tour now, so check them out.

Sharon Van Etten - "Peace Signs" from Epic Stream the whole album at NPR Music

Great songwriter. Bold voice. Amazing folk.

Enjoy Your Pumas find Commonality February 1st

Enjoy Your Pumas are ready to break out of the ice of their native Winnipeg and bring their powerful pop to the rest of the world. A big step in this direction is the release of their debut LP, Commonality which will be out February 1, 2011. The album, which is filled with great hooks, layered guitars, a tight, poppy rhythm section and Rosie Blais’ strong diverse vocals, is sure to remind listeners of Metric, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bloc Party.

Blais and guitarist, Josh Benoit, began Enjoy Your Pumas as a bedroom project and soon expanded the lineup to include a bassist, Marc Gomez and Ian Jeffrey (keyboards/guitar). After a few lineup changes, the band in its current form emerged: with Luke Janzen (drums) now a part of the tight rhythm section and Zach Allard on guitar. The band’s signature dichotomy: lilting and ethereal/aggressive and rhythmic first began to show itself on Ink: The EP which was released in 2009. Now with Commonality, they’ve gotten more cohesive as a band, challenging each other to do better and better.

Enjoy Your Pumas has enjoyed a few other pleasant tastes of the music business this year. They made national headlines when they won the OurStage.com contest to open for Bon Jovi and Kid Rock on the Regina, Saskatchewan stop of their world stadium tour. The lead single from Commonality ,“Weight of the Circles” reached the Top Ten on Winnipeg indie station Kick FM and has received heavy airplay on Winnipeg stations Curve 94.3, Hot 103, as well as CBC Radio.
