West Coast music fans are soon going to have the chance to check out one of the most talked about new bands on the Austin music scene when Cowboy & Indian ride out for a 20-date tour, including dates at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

The rootsy trio began when Jazz Mills (T-Bird and the Breaks) got together with Jesse Plemons to write their first song. The collaboration took off and before long the pair was drawing major buzz at SXSW. Daniel James (frontman of SF based "Leopold and His Fiction") soon joined the band to complete the trio.

“We came together out of nowhere and were immediately inspired by one another,” Mills said. The band immediately put that inspiration to work, by recording their first song, “Hurt My Pride.” With Daniel in San Francisco and Jazz and Jesse in Austin, the bulk of the song was written over the phone. Yet when it came time to record, the chemistry was obvious to all. “We tracked the song as soon as we arrived in San Francisco,” James said, “and did it from the ground up, recording in living rooms, bedrooms and closets.”

The band is currently working its first full-length album, produced by James and due out this spring. They recently recorded a video of "Hurt My Pride” (featured on Baybridged.com) while on their cross-country tour, using playful footage captured in Chicago and on the banks of Lake Michigan. The band’s song “Trouble Tracks” was recently featured in an episode of the NBC hit series Parenthood.

Leopold And His Fiction’s Daniel James Joins Cowboy & Indian in First Music Video “Hurt My Pride”

Daniel James has enough cool for two amazing bands. James, front man of Leopold and His Fiction and member of the newly formed Cowboy & Indian appears in the latter’s playful first music video, “Hurt My Pride”. Cowboy & Indian, consisting of Jazz Mills (T-Bird and the Breaks) and actor Jesse Plemons and Daniel James (guitar and vocals), has only been around a year, but they’ve got a lot to show for it.

Their day show at SXSWcreated lots of buzz, they’re working on a full-length album which James produced, they toured the country from San Francisco to New York and along the way they filmed their first music video with Will Cabral. Says James, “While we were touring through Chicago, the director of the video, Will Cabral, was really in his element and got exactly what he needed for a perfect video to put our music out there for folks to sample”. The video was filmed over two days in Chicago and on the sand dunes of northwest Indiana on the coast of Lake Michigan. The “Hurt My Pride” is available now at: http://www.vimeo.com/14458242

The recording process for Cowboy and Indian has been interesting. Since James was in San Francisco and Jazz and Jesse were in Austin, they wrote “Hurt My Pride” over the phone. But as soon as the two arrived in San Francisco, says James, “We tracked the song from the ground up in living rooms, bedrooms and closets.” Talk about not wasting a moment. Look for the rest of the band’s songs on their upcoming full-length due out in Spring 2011.

When Daniel James is not working on Cowboy and Indian material, he is fronting Leopold and His Fiction, a freak folk band who’s live shows are raucous, high-energy affairs. Leopold and his Fiction’s latest EP, “Golden Friends” has been described as “...haunting and scratchy, and sounds as if it was conjured up in the backrooms of old Western saloons over whiskey and cigarettes,” by Tympanogram. They’ve been in John Baccigaluppi’s The Hangar with Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Little Joy, Vetiver) and this recording ventures out appropriately from the blues structure of the first two records, while engaging start to finish the theatrics and entertainment of voyage fans have become accustomed to hearing. The band climbed to #30 on the CMJ charts with their second album, Ain’t No Surprise and made it into the top 20 with their self-titled debut, while earning praise from NPR, Relix and Big Takeover, among others.

Leopold and His Fiction Embark on Tour to Austin and Back This November

Austin, TX is at the center of Leopold and His Fiction’s two-week Southwest tour, and for good reason. Daytrotter, the Rock Island, Ill.-based website has created a satellite operation at Austin’s Big Orange Studios, and San Francisco’s bluesy rock band Leopold and His Fiction are scheduled for a session. The tour begins on November 6th in San Francisco and includes dates in Los Angeles (at the Silverlight Lounge), Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Dallas and of course, Austin.

Leopold and His Fiction’s live shows are like a magnetic force you can’t resist. "This trio is a trip to watch, boiling and smashing a diverse range of musical genres that is both ethereal and bombastic," said Denise Guerra of the Campus Circle Newspaper about their recent Viper Room show. Charismatic front man Daniel James says of performing live, “We are in our element and want to be nowhere else in the world than on that stage”. They’ve shared the stage with the likes of Deer Tick, Dum Dum Girls, Little Joy and The Studiofix.

Neon Reverb Festival Welcomes Leopold and His Fiction Back for a Second Time

NEON REVERB is a music festival in Las Vegas, NV, created and organized by local, independent promoters, on a not-for-profit basis, simply for the love of music. San Francisco’s Leopold and His Fiction go green when they join the fourth annual Clean Air Clear Stars Festival line-up on Saturday, September 18th at 3pm. The festival features four days of music including sets by Dead Meadow, Whiskey Biscuit, Sky Parade.

Viper Room Hosts Leopold and His Fiction

It may seem quiet in the land of Leopold and His Fiction, but the San Fransisco band has just announced a show at the infamous Viper Room in West Hollywood, CA. On Thursday August 5th, Leopold will play a set as part of the Band Promote Showcase, which also includes Lady Sinatra, The Binges, The Glory Stompers and The Box Squad.

Band Promote is a boutique Promotions and Marketing firm focused on building exposure for some of the best in emerging bands. Founded in 1996 by Los Angeles club promoter and industry veteran, Mike Galaxy, Band Promote began as the very first music marketing firm to successfully utilize the internet to build awareness for breaking artists. Staff Infection - Broken Social Scene(s)

I'm the kind of person who uses music to augment my mood. Feeling down, and I'll throw on "Us" by Regina Spektor and attempt to sing along. Unfocused: Then it'll be Deastro's Keepers to get my nose back to the grindstone. I also love all of the things that technology, social networking and digital devices can do to help me find and share new music. I'm especially in love with the wave of "radio" options lately. If I need music to work by, I just pick a favorite song and off Zune's Smart DJ, Last.fm's radio or Pandora goes. I'm in biz for hours!
This week I found myself listening to a mix of new and old favorites. There's Janelle Monáe for flash and slick production (not to mention pure strangeness), Fleet Foxes for just-have-to-stop-and-listen beauty, and buzzy, shouty punk from Dayton's Human Reunion. All manner of sonic Paxil, Ritalin and Prozac lie in the following list. I hope you enjoy these songs as much as I have.

Music Monday with Foundwaves

Fairly new to the web scene, Foundwaves.com is based in Boston, mainly covering Boston-area bands, but is prepping to add New York and Philadelphia. Based off upcoming concerts and bands playing in the Boston area, Foundwaves doesn't cater to any specific niche or level. Their coverage is based on live shows, reviewing and feeling a part of the performance.

"Perhaps what distinguishes us the most, however, is that instead of viewing ourselves as a traditional media outlet that observes and critiques, we see ourselves as participants in the music scene who actively support it and seek ways to encourage collaboration between musicians and other creative types through the creation of original content."

Music Monday Q&A

1. How long has Foundwaves been operating?

We're the baby of the music blogosphere with only three months of existence, but we're growing quickly. We have five contributing writers (about to add five more), over 20 photographers, and several videographers. Currently our coverage is limited to the Boston area, but we're preparing to expand to NYC and Philly in the next month or so and then other major cities later this year.

2. What makes Foundwaves different from others websites?

We base most of our music coverage around our weekly concert picks. We listen to 100-200 bands a week (seriously!) playing in the Boston area and pick 10-20 of them to feature. Which bands we pick is based on the music, not on whether the band is signed or not, just won an award, or is being buzzed about on the blogosphere. In fact, when we're making the decisions, we don't even know what venue they'll be playing at, and often don't even look at the name of the band. Because of this, we're able to find some amazing bands that a lot of other blogs overlooked.

Once we've made our picks we post show previews and/or show recaps for as many of the bands as we can to introduce our readers to new bands and motivate them to go out to the show or make them wish they hadn't missed it and determined to go next time. We do this through Foundwaves-exclusive photography and videos and our still-evolving Foundwaves show preview writing style, which is notably different from many other blogs. Rather than focusing on biographical, historical, and technical descriptions, our writers try to share the experience of listening to the music using imagery and metaphor. We feel this kind of writing better captures why we love music and encourages a more welcoming environment for all music fans, regardless of their musical background.

3. Do you think Foundwaves has a specific musical niche?

Our focus is primarily on indie bands. So then what is "indie?" ....We'll just have to say that we know "indie" when we hear it. There are plenty of independent, unsigned bands that are definitely not "indie" and there are plenty of signed bands that are "indie." The word really has no relation to "independent" anymore – it's just a word that somehow encapsulates everything from Pavement to Neon Indian and beyond.

4. What contemporary albums are you looking forward to coming out?

Since all of our coverage is built around live concerts, we don't really follow the album release cycle. We can, however, list some of the bands we're looking forward to seeing again the next time they play in Boston: Bad Veins, Hanne Hukkelberg, Leopold and His Fiction, Forest Fires, Conservative Man, Reverse........

5. How does Foundwaves support independent music and what is important about doing so?

In the age of file-sharing, we believe that the most realistic hope independent bands have in making even a subsistence living is through touring. However, at this point the small club scene is a long way from bringing in enough revenue to accomplish this. Therefore, our goal is to help grow the live music scene so that enough music fans are going out to these smaller club shows to support modest livings for independent musicians. There are so many tremendous musicians pouring their heart into their music for very little reward.

6. Do you think online publications are taking precedence over print magazine? What kind of effect do you think that has on bands?

The growth of online music media has been one of the most important developments in music. Print media is limited by the number of magazines and the number of pages in each magazine. Online media obviously has none of these limits, which means many more bands can be featured. In addition, music fans can immediately hear a band and or watch a video online, something that is impossible when reading a print magazine.

7. What blogs/publications do you read other than your own?

We don't want to play favorites with our peers!

8. What has been your most definitive moment since you started at Foundwaves?

Without a doubt, the most definitive moment since launching was receiving our first submission to the Song Muse series, a poem inspired by a song by the great Boston band, Magic Man.

9. If there is any musician/band you could interview (dead or alive) who would it be?

We rarely find band interviews that interesting, so we'd have to go with one of the most eccentric musicians ever: jazz composer and pianist, Sun Ra, whose life experiences included a brief abduction by aliens from Saturn. Really!

10. If you could be in any band (of all time), who would you rock with?

Without a doubt it would have to be Earth, Wind, and Fire in 1975.

San Diego Gets Down with Leopold and His Fiction

Indie Rock Reviews attended last week's Leopold and His Fiction show at Bar Pink in San Diego. Lemon Sun shared the stage that night for what sounds like a wicked time. The oh-so-friendly Monti Smith of IRR took a score of awesome, sweaty pictures and posted them for all of us who could not attend the gig.

"Revved up Honky Tonk shoots forth from the amps and mics. Bassist, Micayla Grace bounces barefoot and brazenly from every corner of the small 5 ft x 5 ft area that the three piece inhabits. Daniel falls to his knees as the Detroit fuzz escalates, and Jon brings up the tempo via the drums. A new sound familiar to all causes everyone present to put their hands together and stomp their feet. Once again, the gang has come in and swept a crowd off their feet."

"Leopold and His Fiction have been a favorite of ours over here at IRR for quite awhile. Daniel even did an exclusive Bionic Ear Session with us in which he recorded a song and our very own Travis did some of the Hand Claps. Now you may be thinking to yourself ,”Big deal, I can clap my hands.” And while that’s probably true, can you clap good enough to be recorded? Think about that! Now listen to it here..."

Lost At E Minor recently spread the gospel of Leopold and His Fiction in a highly favorable review. "I could easily compare Leopold and his Fiction to a vintage wine, a vintage car maybe, but they’re more like a rough piece of aged leather, one that’s been soaked and handled accordingly, reconstituted for a modern-day take. Leopold and His Fiction set to Rock BFD 2010

On June 6th, San Francisco’s Leopold and his Fiction will play the annual BFD (yes, that stands for what you think it does), Live 105’s annual summer show on the festival’s Local Stage. Over thirty bands, including Sublime with Rome, Deftones, Hole, Spoon, Matt & Kim, and Cage the Elephant will play on four stages for a full day of music at Shoreline Amphitheatre.

Relix has said of Leopold and his Fiction’s live shows, “They play like a subdued Whiskeytown, sloshed from the wistful fumes of coastal deserts…The heel taps, the hands clap, and the head paces to the bucking gait of the percussion." With visually stimulating live shows that often finds listeners in a dark, smoke-filled bar where the beer is cheap and the music makes you take notice, Leopold and his Fiction understand that some things are meant for the studio and some are meant to excite you at the live show. Fans have come to expect music and style influenced by the early 70’s and performed with energy that gets the crowd on their feet and dancing. “We are in our element and want to be nowhere else in the world than on that stage,” says front man and founder Daniel James.

Leopold and his Fiction climbed to #30 on the CMJ charts with their second album, Ain’t No Surprise and made it into the top 20 with their self-titled debut, while earning praise from NPR, Relix and Big Takeover, among others. They are currently recording their new album with Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Little Joy, Vetiver) as co-producer in the vintage setting of John Baccigaluppi’s The Hanger. They’ve shared the stage with many musicians including Little Joy, The Dum Dum Girls, and The Studiofix.

UK Digs Deep into Leopold and His Fiction

UK music blog Mojophenia - Mind Over Music gave some sweet love to the Leopold and His Fiction EP, while offering a listen to "Golden Friends" and "Ain't No Surprise" directly on the site. We all know how much the British love American bands who burn with heartfelt roots-rock and Detroit-twang & blues rock 'n' roll. We are very happy about this and so are so many State-side Americana, roots and southern-style rock bands.
