Staff Infection: Valentine's Day

It's kind of a cliche to hate Valentine's Day. Especially if you're single. While I can't say that I'm in love with the card- and candy-selling holiday, I took this year's February 14th to explore the sadder side of the love song. From the triumphant to the tissue-worthy, here's my list of love songs that touch the darker side of the heart.

Fitz and the Tantrums - "Money Grabber" from
Pickin' Up the Pieces

Cee Lo Green "F*ck You"

The Decemberists - "O Valencia!" from The Crane Wife

George Jones - "He Stopped Loving Her Today"

Staff Infection: Spin City

It's 2pm on a Monday and I've been counting down the hours until my spinning class at 5:30pm. Who would have thought I would have ever been excited about exercising. Certainly not me. I've also found a new found love for Rihanna and Eminem as a result. I'll spare you from that playlist though, instead offering a solid indie rock list grounded in my roots of what makes me oh-so-hipster-cool.

Animal Collective, "My Girls"

Amy Winehouse, "Rehab"

Lily Allen, "Smile"

Apples in Stereo, "Can You Feel It?"

Arctic Monkeys, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor"

The Black Keys, "When the Lights Go Out"

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, "Shuffle Your Feet"

Blur, "Girls & Boys"

Bridges & Powerlines, "Balcony"
Bridges & Powerlines - Balcony by greenlightgo

Brandi Carlile, "Dying Day"

Coconut Records, "Microphone"

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. "Simple Girl" "Live on KEXP"

The Delays, "Valentine"

Broken Bells, "The High Road"

The Cooper Temple Clause, "Promises, Promises"

Staff Infection: Winter Songs

With the exception of the 50 degree heat wave we got on New Year's Eve, it's been a brutally cold winter here in Michigan. This is the time of year where I would much rather hibernate in my little apartment than bundle up and face old man winter's wrath. In hopes of braving the next few months with a smile on my face, I've complied a little mix to get through the winter solstice. Stay warm, friends!

Fleet Foxes, "White Winter Hynmal" from Fleet Foxes

Brendan Benson, "Cold Hands (Warm Heart)" from The Alternative To Love

Nada Surf, "Blizzard of '77" from Let Go

Nicole Atkins, "Snowshakes" from Bleeding Diamonds

Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, "On a Freezing Chicago Street" from The Dust of Retreat

Yo La Tengo, "Winter A Go-Go" from Summer Sun

The Weepies, "Antarctica" from Hideaway

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Maps"

Daft Punk- “Derezzed”

Staff Infection: Top 5 Zed Songs

Originally, I was going to write about my top 10 music videos of 2010, but instead I decided to write about the inspiration I receive from my 15 year old son, Zed, and the music he listens too. I am a music publicist, but don’t always “dig as deep,” or have the time to listen to music in the leisurely way that I used to do. Zed is my own personal DJ. He turns me on to so many great bands. I have listed my top five “Zed songs.”

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros-I love their dreamy 60’s sound. Zed bought me Up From Below for my birthday.

Rehearsal Space: Ratatat-I absolutely love Ratatat. These guys are brilliant!

Notorious B.I.G. - Party & Bullshit (RATATAT REMIX)-I love this remix by Ratatat. Sometimes when the day has just been too HEAVY, I’ll say “Hey, Zed put that song on, you know the party song.” We roll down the windows and blast it, and sing the chorus really loud and laugh.

The xx performing "Crystalize" - KCRW at SXSW 2010-I love this UK band, and their ethereal vocals. Zed saw them at the Mohawk during SXSW.

Jay-Z: Death to Auto-Tune-A true poet. He is at the top of my list of musicians that I would like to meet. Zed bought The Blueprint 3 for me on Mothers Day.

NPR Music: The Fresh Air Interview: Jay-Z with Terry Gross

“The Great Big Gig in The Sky” Pink Floyd-I have heard this song a million times, but I really heard it for the first time driving down the highway with Zed. I love those moments where I am knocked off my feet by a new realization, feeling, or moment in regards to a song. This one did it for me. Body rushes and tears galore. A “fall down on your knees song,” as my mom used to say.

Staff Infection: Oh, the Stories I Could Tell

Call me crazy, but I listen to the bands I work. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some amazing bands over the years, ones I still listen to this day. So we'll call this staff infection a little retrospective of my years in the music industry.

Gwyneth & Monko-“Get In the Sun” (free mp3)

Ben Kweller, “Penny on the Train Track” Exercise video, brilliant.

Enjoy Your Pumas- “Weight of the Circles”(free mp3)

John Shipe-“Love Belongs to Everyone” (free mp3)

Belle & Sebastian- “I Want the World to Stop”

Neil Nathan, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”

Staff Infection: Midwestern Charm

There aren't many places in this world I love more than the great city of Chicago, so when I had the opportunity to head into the Windy City to catch up with a few old friends, I didn't hesitate to pack my bags.

Besides, seeing the cover of one of my favorite albums in person is always worth the trip:

Spending four hours in the car allowed me to listen to a whole bunch of songs that were stockpiled in my iPod, including few of my favorite driving tunes:

Iggy Pop, "Lust for Life" from Lust for Life

Hurricane Bells, "This Year" from Tonight is the Ghost

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Cheated Hearts" from Show Your Bones

The Tallest Man on Earth, "Honey Won't You Let Me In" from Shallow Grave

Spoon, "The Underdog" from Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

David Bowie, "Young Americans" from Young Americans

Staff Infection: Waiting on a Theme

I'm usually so good with themes, but I can't really seem to find one here. Instead of tying it all together, maybe I'll just say a few words about each song.

Screaming Females - "I Don't Mind It" from Castle Talk

This band blew me away when I saw them live in August. Marissa Paternoster is the most no-holds-barred female singer I have ever seen live. She has no concern for the way she looks when she sings, and it makes her that much more magnetic.

Drunken Barn Dance - "Ain't No Weather Fouler" from Grey Buried

I've been hearing this song for probably close to three years now, and I never get tired of it. Which is a good thing, since part of being in a music video involves hearing the song over and over again. Yes, you guessed it! I'm in this video. Watch me shamble my way to stardom below.

Enjoy Your Pumas - "Weight of the Circles" from Commonality

Another great female singer heads this Winnipeg band. Serious Metric vibes going on here.

Counting Crows - "Einstein on the Beach (For an Eggman)" from DGC Rarities Vol. 1

This is an old favorite of mine. Probably my favorite Counting Crows song ever. One of those things that puts you in a time machine and sends you back to when you were 14 and music was the only thing that could make you happy.

The Beggars - "Sleepaway Camp" from Party to the People

This band, as you will see in the video, knows how to put on a live show. Steve, another magnetic lead singer, not only grabs your attention, he pushes it down to the floor where it sits, cross-legged, for the whole of their set. Which of course, leaves you to dance, shout and CHOP! along.

Pewter Cub - "Wallflower Mourner"

Full of synth, but not reliant on it, Pewter Cub's music is moody in the best way.

Bridges and Powerlines - "Mirabell" from Eve

I had the privilege to see B&P last night. Their music is not only fun to hear, but fun to see as well! They're on tour now, so check them out.

Sharon Van Etten - "Peace Signs" from Epic Stream the whole album at NPR Music

Great songwriter. Bold voice. Amazing folk.

Staff Infection: Everyone Loves Monday

Unless you sleep in until noon, and bum-around in your fluffy robe eating bon-bon's all Monday afternoon, you most likely don't like Monday's.

Where did the weekend go? I don't know either, (refer to photo). You must be thinking the same thing.

I'm also struggling to solve the mystery of my "to-do" list I chalked up for the weekend. Guess I missed the "to-do" part of it - at least I made a list! Taking this in a positive direction, I've discovered a new talent, making lists. As you may know, talent doesn't just happen, it takes a lot of hard work.

With that being said, here is a playlist of what will be getting me through this Monday, as I fantasize about my fluffy robe and bon-bon's. No need to thank me, the pleasure was all mine.

Yours truly,
Kristina

MGMT, "Weekend Wars" from Oracular Spectacular

The Crystal Method, Glass Breaker from London

Bebel Gilberto, "Mais Feliz" from Tanto Tempo

While you think about your robe and bon-bon's:

Gavin Friday, "Angel" from Romeo & Juliet soundtrack

Kleerup, "Until We Bleed" from Kleerup

Staff Infection: Samples and Seeing the Light:: Right On

(*Editors note: This little lady to the left is named Molly. Molly is the face of Bryan Sanchez. We will continue to pester Bryan to show his face by the time his next Staff Infection rolls around, just to prove we like working with men just as much as other women.)

But for now, let's just let Bryan get straight to it:

The latest album by The Roots features a fantastic collection of new songs that showcases the Philly band blending the realms of hip-hop with incredible new beats. Their guest appearances are far more ranging than before – Dirty Projectors and Monsters of Folk to mention a few – but perhaps the finest guest spot is the sample used on “Right On.” Here is the song:
That sample happens to be the exact same hook that Joanna Newsome wrote for “The Book of Right On.” Here is her original version, as performed on the Jools Holland show:
The former one, which appears on How I Got Over, is the album’s centerpiece and at the heart of the album, it’s perfectly sequenced. Obviously, being the best band on late night has introduced ?uestlove, Black Thought and Co. to a wonderful array of new musicians and they’ve definitely seized that opportunity. But besides that, it’s still one of my favorite hip-hop albums of the year and probably their best album in the past five years.
Other than that, I got to see one of the best current bands, Spoon, two times in the span of three days when they played here in El Paso, TX on Wed. Oct. 6 and then in Austin, at the Austin City Limits Festival, on Friday, Oct. 8. With an immense catalog – one that has been downright exceptional since 1998 – and an impeccable musicianship that beguiles their gritty strength, the performances were surreal. Their new album, Transference, is definitely of the highest quality, here is my personal favorite song off it, “I Saw the Light.”

Staff Infection: New Office, New Music

The GLG offices are officially located in a new office, so it only seemed appropriate to inaugurate the new location with new music. Thanks to Belle & Sebastian and Sufjan Steven for lending a hand in this department. Now if only they could have lent a hand last week when I went through the desk set up disaster. If anyone has creative ideas to cover three unnecessary drill holes in the top of the desk, my ears are wide open.

Sufjan Stevens, “I Walked” from The Age of Adz
Belle & Sebastian, “Write About Love” from Write About Love
Freelance Whales, “Enzymes” from Green Label Sound Series

Staff Infection: Warning Sign

“A warning sign, you came back to haunt me and I realized,” as I pulled off my covers, how cold it was, “so I crawl back into your open arms,” Mr. Bear.

Colder mornings, shorter days and wider waistlines: warning signs of winter. Which is why I found myself a sweet bear to cozy up with this winter. And that’s Bear, Mr. Bear.

This fall, I plan to make the most of everything, with Mr. Bear of course. Am I making you jealous yet? Don’t be. We’ve made a little playlist for you and
your Bear. Enjoy.

Coldplay, “Warning Sign” from Funeral

The Hundred In The Hands, “
Young Aren't Young” from The Hundred In The Hands

Swedish House Mafia, “
One (Your Name)” from One (Your Name) [Feat. Pharrell]

The xx, “
Crystalised” from XX

Nouvelle Vague, “
In A Manner Of Speaking” from Dance With Me

Staff Infection: Under the Tuscan Sun

I'm one week away from a dream trip to Italy with my gal pal Sabrina. Have I watched Under the Tuscan Sun and dreamed of owning a villa of my own? Guilty. In order to take a dream trip though, a little sacrifice comes into play with the pre-vacation week schedule. These are just a few songs that have helped get me through the long days that often go into the night.

Of Montreal, “Coquet Coquette” from False Priest
Ra Ra Riot, “Too Dramatic” from The Orchard
Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs “Beg Steal and Borrow” from God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise
Sufjan Stevens, All Delighted People EP (courtesy of Gorilla vs Bear)

Staff Infection: Operation Don't Complain Edition

Those who know me know I’ve taking on a personal endeavor entitled “Operation: Don’t Complain”. This isn’t the first time I’ve taken on this endeavor, but it’s the first time I’ve had the accountability of Facebook to keep it going. Every day (ok, almost every day) I give a status update on the process. And believe me it is a process. Today is day 37, and don’t get me wrong, a few complaints have leaked in there. In fact, there have been entire days devoted to a break in my no complaint status. There are a few songs that help get me back on track though. So if you find yourself on that iceberg of negativity, I encourage you to take a few listens to the songs that are a near direct route to positivity junction. And yes, this is a motherload of songs, but what can I say? There are days I need all the help I can get.

Elvis Costello, “Sneaky Feelings” from My Aim is True
David Gray, “Babylon” from White Ladder
Lily Allen, “Everything’s Just Wonderful” from Alright, Still
Golden Bloom, “If You Believe”, from Fan the Flames
Bill Withers, “Let it Be” from Just As I Am
Broken Bells, “The High Road” from Broken Bells (courtesy of Stereogum)
The Doves, “There Goes the Fear” from The Last Broadcast
Fanfarlo, “The Walls are Coming Down” from from
Paul Westerberg, “Whatever Makes You Happy” from Suicide Gratification
Heartless Bastards, “Could Be So Happy” from The Mountain
Jem, “Just a Ride” from Finally Woken

Staff Infection - On the Road Again

Traveling music. It's some of my favorite kind. Having recently returned from a long trip to Yellowstone, I've still got traveling on the mind. A good traveling song doesn't have to be about a road trip, although it helps. It does have to have a sense of moving, which these five songs do.

Great Lakes Myth Society,
"Across The Bridge" from S/T
Tom Petty, "Free Fallin'" from Full Moon Fever
America,
"Ventura Highway" from Homecoming
Arcade Fire,
"Rococo" from The Suburbs
Jens Lekman "The End of the World is Bigger Than Love" taken from a single

Staff Infection: Heart of the Matter

In just over a week I’ll be turning 37 years old. For those of you keeping tabs who would like to wish me a very happy birthday, the exact date is August 3rd (I am a Leo after all so of course I need to make the day known).

July always seems to be this period of self-evaluation for me where I benchmark my successes for the year and measure whether I’ve achieved what I’ve wanted to achieve. So in my little self-reflective state it came to me that it’s all about heart. It’s all about doing what you love at all times, and fortunately for myself I can say that I spend a good majority of my time doing just that.

So in honor of the heart and going after another year’s worth of goals, I’m dedicating this week’s staff infection to getting to the heart of the matter:

Ben Mallott, “Heartbreaks” From Looks Good, Feels Good
Brendan Benson, “Cold Hands, Warm Heart”  From Alternative to Love
Death Cab for Cutie, “Your Heart is an Empty Room” From Plans
Naked Hearts, “Dark Shade” From Mass Hysteria
Ron Sexsmith, “Cold Hearted Wind” From Time Being
The Rosebuds, “Big Heartbreak” From The Rosebuds Make Out
Stars, “Heart”, From Heart

Staff Infection: Radiohead: Real and Imagined Soundtracks

I hope I'm not the only one who's ever experienced this. You're walking, running, biking or driving down the street listening to some music. A song comes on that transports you into the movie that is your life. There's a reason we make this connection. Soundtrack Coordinators work hard to use music to evoke a mood. When we see the movie, the action on screen is inextricably tied to the music we hear. Here's some songs that have provided that extra emotional oomph to some of my favorite real (and imagined) movie soundtracks.

Radiohead, "Black Star" from The Bends, and a super-emo mixed tape from my past.

Feist, "Mushaboom" from (500) Days of Summer Soundtrack

Thomas Newman, "Dead Already" from The American Beauty Soundtrack

"This whole soundtrack got me through my first stint in college. I listened to it over and over while I did my homework or wrote papers. Thanks for that Magna Cum Laude, Tom."

Sufjan Stevens, "Chicago" from Little Miss Sunshine Motion Picture Soundtrack (and about a million "indie" movie trailers)

Frou Frou (featuring Imogen Heap) , "Let Go" from Garden State Soundtrack

Jack Lawrence , "Beyond the Sea"
(performed in movie by Ewan McGregor and Cameron Diaz) from A Life Less Ordinary Motion Picture Soundtrack

"A note that the McGregor/Diaz duet doesn't actually exist on any soundtrack (and believe me, I've looked), so for full enjoyment, rent this lesser known work of Academy Award winner Danny Boyle."

Jace Everett, "Bad Things" from True Blood Original TV Soundtrack

The Shins, "New Slang" from Garden State Motion Picture Soundtrack

Prodigy, "Firestarter" from The Fat of the Land (and the inside of my head)

Staff Infection: Family Ties Mixtape

What is a mixtape?

To some people, a mixtape is simply a collection of songs. For others, mixes are used to prepare for a significant event, like a first date or a road trip. Since I spend part of my day teaching Literature to community college students who often look older than I do and the other part of my day scouting out new clients for Green Light Go, I’m always on the move.

My iPod (which I endearingly refer to as “Pod Stewart”) is my saving grace, because my music listening habits are about as fluid as my lifestyle. One thing I love about my iPod is that I can use the “On-the-Go” feature to make a mini mixtape at the click of a button, to kick start my day or create a short list of favorite songs to listen to at a moment’s notice.

In the wake of Father’s Day, I’ve decided to make a little mixtape that relates to one of the most important themes in my life: my family.

When I was around five years old, my father (a former rock drummer), took our family on a trip to Graceland so that I could visit the home of my idol at the time, Elvis Presley. Growing up, I inherited my knowledge of rock history from my Uncle Dave, the man who presented me with my first Sony Walkman and The Beatles’ Help! cassette tape on my sixth birthday. Last summer, Dave and I had the pleasure of seeing Ian McLagan perform (one of our favorite Faces), which will always be one of my fondest memories. Ultimately, my family has been instrumental in shaping my love and appreciation for music, so I made this Monday Mixtape with them in mind.

Moving forward, my future Staff Infection columns will feature the Monday Mixtapes I create, so you can plug in a set of ear buds and race across town with me.

Monday Mixtape – Family Ties

Sam Roberts, “Detroit ’67” from Love at the End of the World

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, “Home” from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

The Beatles, “Help!” from Help!

Coconut Records, “Drummer” from Davy

Faces, “Ooh La La” from Ooh La La

Wilco, “Hummingbird” from A Ghost is Born

Pete Yorn, “Suspicious Minds” (Elvis Presley Cover) from Live From New Jersey

Photo (Left to Right) - Janelle Rogers, Ian McLagan, Lauren Roberts, David McIntyre, Uncle Dave Roberts.

Staff Infection: She & Him(s)

I'm notorious for downloading ten albums the week they come out (legally I might add) and then letting at least half of them slip through the cracks. I'm also notorious for listening to my iPod on shuffle and then realizing I had an album I didn't know I had. Such is the case with The Submarines who released their record, Honeysuckle Weeks in 2008. It became my album of choice this week as I rode around on my pink Townie cruiser (yes, I get a few stares). I swear every time I listen to "Swimming Pool" I picture Zooey Deschanel doing the same in one of her cute little cotton dresses. Chances are she probably has.

In an ode to all those boy-girl bands or she and hims if you will, this week's Staff Infection honors them. And anyone who's followed the GLG roster, knows we have a bit of a penchant for those boy-girl swapped vocals, so it seems apt we would kick off the new column with the very heart of bands that seem to infect our ears.

The Submarines, "Swimming Pool" (sample) from Honeysuckle Weeks
She & Him, "Thieves" from Volume 2 (MP3 posted by Pretty Much Amazing)
The Naked Hearts, "Call Me" from Mass Hysteria
The White Ravens, "Sparks" from Gargolyes and Weather Vanes (Release Date 7/6/10)
Gwyneth & Monko, "Lexington Ballad" from the Good Old Horse EP (Release Date 7/20/10)
The True Jacqueline, "Mondegreen" from Nice Bird (Release Date 6/22/10)
