Shawn Fogel to Play Two Solo Shows with Avi Wisnia

Flying solo is no sweat for Golden Bloom’s Shawn Fogel. While he often performs live with a band, Fogel’s used to going it alone in the studio, where he creates all of Golden Bloom’s music himself. He’ll be playing a solo set of his soaring power pop at New York's Googie’s Lounge on February 24th and Legendary Dobbs in Philadelphia on February 25th. Avi Wisnia will also perform a solo set.

Last year was a big year for Shawn Fogel, who joined the likes of Ben Kweller and Guster's Ryan Miller in Brooklyn and at SXSW, shared the stage with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Hey Marseilles, Telekinesis and Sea Wolf and played sold out Neutral Uke Hotel shows across the country.

Shawn Fogel to Uke it up in Roger Greenawalt’s Beatles Complete on Ukulele January 15th

You never know when a ukulele will come in handy. It’s a good thing Shawn Fogel (Golden Bloom, Neutral Uke Hotel) plays a mean one, because he’ll be putting it to good use as he takes part in Roger Greenwalt’s The Beatles Complete on Ukulele January 15^th at Brooklyn Bowl. The event, spanning two days, will feature Greenwalt and a host of special guests playing every single Beatles song on ukulele. This year, guests include The Zambonis, and Nellie McKay. Last year’s shows featured guest appearances from, Ryan Miller of Guster, Adam Green, The Pierces, and Ben Kweller.

Shawn Fogel is officially in the ukulele camp, as evidenced by his recent project Neutral Uke Hotel. The band played Neutral Milk Hotel’s beloved In the Aeroplane Over the Sea live to packed rooms of singing, stomping fans all over the country. Fogel says of this project, “It’s one of my favorite records ever, and the album doesn’t just have fans. The people who love that album are obsessed with it…. The goal of the project: [is] to strip these songs down and get people in a room to share their love for this album.

Last year was a big year for Shawn Fogel, who joined the likes of Ben Kweller and Guster's Ryan Miller in Brooklyn and at SXSW and played sold out Neutral Uke Hotel shows across the country. His project, Golden Bloom, is currently in the studio recording the follow up to Fan the Flames (2009); shooting for a release this year. He’s already tracking songs with Ryan Ball and plans to work with producer Peter Katis again.

Daytrotter Session with Golden Bloom, Neutral Uke Hotel and The Motion Sick

As a Neutral Milk Hotel fan myself, I've accepted the fact that Jeff Mangum will not be reuniting the band for a comeback tour. In fact, I would hope he wouldn't, because that would simply be a bit too Bon Jovi for my taste. (Sorry Jon, you seem like a really nice guy, but I expected a few more rock & roll moves on your recent appearance on Ellen). But I digress.

Shawn Fogel of Golden Bloom had this little idea to recreate Neutral Milk Hotel on ukulele just once for a show in Boston. Neutral Milk Hotel fans had another idea however and Neutral Uke Hotel was born.

A few months ago, the band comprised of members of Golden Bloom and The Motion Sick took the show on the road, stopping off in Iowa for a Daytrotter session. Daytrotter's Sean Moeller said of the experience:

"...Shawn Fogel is out there, moving around, turning the staggeringly emotional and moving songs that Mangum wrote lo those many years ago into magnificent homages to the originals. Only, the Golden Bloom frontman treats them with his ukulele - though he strays from giving them a cheeky, wine-tasting party blush of romanticism that fellow uke-wielding crooner Dent May might. They are pretty, close to the vest renditions and yet, they feel less like strict covers and more like tributes with a capital T. This rolling company of buddies in the bands Golden Bloom, the Motion Sick and Fogel's quirky Neutral Uke project share an immediately catchable thread of needing closeness, of looking for those special comers whom they can spend "30 Lives" with or whom they could call on to help see through the gunk to the bright stars, up there somewhere."

The Other Side with photographer Alicia J. Rose

Born and bred in Los Angeles, Alicia J. Rose has been a professional photographer for nearly a decade now. She’s been working her way up the west coast since she left the roost at 18 and called San Francisco home for a while, before relocating to Portland in the mid 90’s, where she lives today. Although she spends most of her time taking photographs for artists like The Thermals, Menomena, Y La Bamba, Stars of Track and Field, and Golden Bloom, Rose’s interest in photography was sparked by her own love of music. She explains, “I started playing accordion as Miss Murgatroid in the early days, but I kind of lost my [interest in] it a few years ago. Only recently have I started enjoying myself again as a player. Oddly enough, it’s the drums that have drawn me in. I started playing at the beginning of this year and now I’m singing and drumming in a new duo called White Widow with my pal Shawna Gore. Apparently, I was a drummer hiding in an accordion player’s body. Who knew?” In the future, Alicia plans to take up film making, since directing is her new obsession. Through photography, she came to the realization that she had been directing all along. Making music videos was a way to incorporate a new energy and passion into her work, while applying a trained photographer’s eye.

We were able to convince Alicia J. Rose to step away from her double life as a music booker/promoter/partner at Mississippi Studios to tell us what it’s like to be on The Other Side:

 Green Light Go: How did you get started as a music photographer? Was there a defining moment that inspired you to work in this field, or was this career path always in the cards?

Alicia J. Rose: I started photographing bands when I started booking and working in college radio (at KUSF) in 1990. It was a natural progression for me to combine these two loves, especially after I had some killer band photos taken by Don Lewis in Los Angeles for my Miss Murgatroid release, Myoclonic Melodies. Lewis was a film shooter who employed multiple light sources and long exposures to make photos that truly blew my mind. They were a perfect representation for me as an artist. It was then that I realized what a difference proper photography makes.

I considered photography as a hobby in the early days, but I photographed a lot of rad bands, like Steel Pole Bath Tub, Tilt, Ovarian Trolley and a few others who were mostly pals from the scene I was getting to know. I also had a sweet (but smelly) darkroom in the basement of the first club I booked – The Chameleon on Valencia Street. My first camera was an Olympus OM10 that my dad gave me when I left to attend S.F. State. The camera served me well until I got my hands on a medium format Yashica Twin Lens, which slippery-sloped me into the Hasselblad, a Swedish magic camera system that I am still obsessed with.

I think I became a “professional” music photographer somewhere in the early 2000’s, after I had worked with The Decemberists. I had a day job for nearly a decade with NAIL Distribution. When I left to take on the talent buyer’s position at Doug Fir Lounge, I was able to focus my energy on photography more. My proximity to musicians was quite synergistic for my photography career.

 GLG: Over the years, you’ve shot for quite a few music magazines, such as Under the Radar, CMJ Magazine, Spin, and Magnet and have earned an impressive roster of clients, including The Thermals, Golden Bloom, Vagabond Opera, Stars of Track & Field, and The Decemberists. Who are you shooting for these days and what bands are you working with?

AJR: This year, my work has mostly been with northwest bands. I just spent the weekend shooting one of my favorite new Portland acts, AgesandAges. They have a new album coming out in February with Knitting Factory/Partisan. I’ve also recently shot press photos and album art for Menomena, Fences, Hey Marseilles, Y La Bamba, Sean Flinn & The Royal We, Mackintosh Braun, and Musee Mechanique. To be honest, I’d love to get out of town (or out of the country) a bit more and shoot bands outside of the northwest. New locations and people provide new inspiration, which is good. I love being plopped in the middle of a new city and eye it from a photo-location-emotional-relation perspective.

GLG: When you set out to photograph a new band, how do you determine a location and how to set up the shoot?

AJR: I usually start by talking to the band and I spend some quality time listening to their music. I’ll find out what (if any) concepts they have been toying with. In listening to their music, I’ll glean for myself for some of the inherent themes present [in the tunes]. We talk about their inspirations, who they are as people, and what their music is about. I also like to talk about the places they feel a connection with or have access to. This can yield some fun results. Once we have things sorted out, I’ll determine whether [the shoot will be] a daylight or strobe affair. I’ve been really into mixing light lately to make sunlight my bitch with different reflectors and film stocks. Geek alert!

Sometimes there is collaboration [with the artist], but other times, I’m called upon to “wave the wand” so to speak and find the right setting, look, or theme on my own. Not everyone has a clear vision of how they should be represented in the public eye, because that can be really tricky. There are a lot of bad band photos out there. Luckily, I have been booking, promoting bands, and promoting shows for as long as I have been a photographer, so I can be the “band whisperer” and pocket psychologist in difficult creative situations. I usually get to the root of someone’s vibe or creative ethos through casual conversation and a genuine connection with their own process and musical vision. There is a way to bring out the best in every subject, if you know what you are looking for.

GLG: From a photographer’s point of view, how do you know that you are a good match for a band? What things do you have to keep in mind before agreeing to work with an artist?

AJR: Well, I definitely have to respect someone as a human being and appreciate what they’re doing creatively and professionally. I look at every shoot as [a way to add] to my body of work, so there is some pickiness on my part, but I also am up for new types of clients and technical challenges. I put a lot of work into my own process, so I tend to go deeper with folks on an art direction level, especially when I fall in love with [their] record. The bonus is that by creating unique and intuitive images for an artist, they become armed with the proper tools to forge a path in this messy little business.

GLG: What is the best piece of advice you’d give a band that thinks they are ready to hire a photographer?

AJR: DO IT…and understand that band photography is not an afterthought, it’s a statement and an investment along the same lines as recording, manufacturing, or graphic design. If you are a brand new band, have a friend that shows some photographic promise shoot you and [don’t be afraid to] be creative. After a spell, the amateur stuff won’t hold up, so to become successful and play bigger clubs, you will need a decent image for advertisements. This is when imagery, band branding, and aesthetic really start to matter. If there’s a specific photographer or artist that you resonate with, hit them up. If you’re nice, [the photographer] may do you a favor. In the meanwhile, save up [to hire a photographer]. It’s worth playing a couple extra shows to pay for band pictures, because sweet photos will lead to better bookings and a lot more press!

GLG: What are the most challenging and rewarding things about being a music photographer?

AJR: The biggest challenge I have faced is not being in the way of the right work [at times]. I live in Portland by choice, not in LA or NYC, so I often feel like I’m missing out on the big stuff. Plus, I remain unrepresented by a legit agency, but I maintain the belief that my work speaks for itself. I know [word] gets out there by proxy of my subjects’ travels, so hopefully, people who feel passionately about [music photography] will continue to reach out.

The best thing is getting the chance to consistently collaborate with other artists to help define their point of view through my own…that jazzes me to the core. It’s satisfying to dial talented artists in with images that compliment and help expand their own artistic and musical vision. Getting to apply my filter to [the band] is really a blast, but I don’t think it’s necessarily respected as its own art form. My years as a promoter have gifted me with the ability to key into aesthetics as a driving force of cultural zeitgeist. It is challenging, yes, but I figure it’s best to lead by example. My goal is to do my best to elevate my perspective by kicking ass and making more stunning and effective pictures. Lately, I have been on a kick to do more “holy trinity” work with bands. [This is] where I contribute to general art direction, create album art or take press photos, and create a music video for the release of a record. These 3-part zingers have proven to be my favorite, most challenging projects to date.

Golden Bloom Covers Wussy’s “Magic Words”

Choosing a song to cover is an art. Golden Bloom’s Shawn Fogel is quite adept at it, as shown by his choice of Wussy’s “Magic Words,” a track from the Cincinnati quartet’s celebrated self-titled album. “Magic Words,” a mid-tempo rocker, and his favorite, is transformed lovingly by Fogel into a poppier version of itself. Still present are the droning guitars, but added are the shiny synth touches that are a Golden Bloom trademark. All of this adds up to a unique approach to Wussy’s well-crafted phrases and lyrics. “I heard a lot of possibilities in my head, different directions I could take the song, says Fogel. “I ended up trying to inject a little more power into the pop and had a lot of fun reinterpreting this song in the studio.”  Fogel is not alone in the desire to reimagine Wussy. This Will Not End Well, a remix album that was digitally released in September, is filled with tracks from Wussy, but does not include “Magic Words”.

Shawn Fogel is no stranger to the art of the cover. This past summer and at CMJ 2010, he and members of Golden Bloom and The Motion Sick embarked on the ambitious task of playing Neutral Uke Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over The Sea live on ukulele, melodica and trumpet as Neutral Uke Hotel. The shows were well received, filling venues with fans singing, clapping and stomping along to the beloved album.

Fogel is back in the studio with Peter Katis (Frightened Rabbit, The National, Interpol and Tokyo Police Club), to produce some tracks on the follow up to Fan the Flames, which was compared favorably to Summerteeth-era Wilco, The New Pornographers, and Big Star and loved by critics and fans alike.

CMJ 2010: This is How You Know You Are in New York

New York suffers from  its own fair share of stereotypes. Jaded scenesters, a certain taking for granted what may be an unusual scene around you if you were located just about anywhere else. Take for instance, the two videos Modern Mystery Blog shot of Golden Bloom and Neutral Uke Hotel outside a grocery store in Williamsburg. Not only will you see two very fine performances in my humble opinion, you'll also see the coming and goings of grocery shoppers without a blink of an eye to a group of six guys performing on the street. Not even drummer, Andrew Laubaucher, playing on a guitar case phased them.




And then there was the Green Room Music Source Showcase on October 21st where Golden Bloom continued to prove they are a band who knows how to go with the flow as melophobe demonstrates in their live review of the showcase, "The guitarist in Golden Bloom uses a butter knife for a slide; the drummer used a Rice-A-Roni package as a shaker. Those kind of facts give you an indication of the type of band this is - a fly by the seat of your pants, use whatever you’ve got on hand type of outfit, just looking to make music."

Limewire reviewed the set saying: "I came in for the tail end of Golden Bloom’s set, featuring lead singer Shawn Fogel’s crystal-clear, earnest voice and comfy power pop dance tunes. But what we were truly waiting for was Neutral Uke Hotel, also headed up by Fogel and consisting of two ukes, baritone, trumpetini (tiny trumpet!), snare drum, one very large mustache, and a whole lot of singing along. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a re-imagining of Neutral Milk Hotel’s music, as realized by the ukulele. Neutral Uke Hotel played indie rock’s magnum opus In the Aeroplane Over the Sea in its entirety, but rather than re-interpreting the record, it felt like a tribute and celebration as most of the room sang along. A Jeff Mangum sighting is on par with a UFO these days, but trite as it sounds, if he’d been present, there’s no way he couldn’t have been somewhat charmed by a crowd of people singing his album, word for word. After finishing the record, Neutral Uke Hotel finished the set with “Song Against Sex” from On Avery Island."

Golden Bloom and Canadian Invasion Team Up Again on October 22nd for Kickstarter Campaign

Why quit when you’ve got a good thing going? Golden Bloom’s Shawn Fogel will sing with Canadian Invasion backing him up. They’ll play a selection of Golden Bloom and Canadian Invasion songs at Grooveground on Friday, October 22nd. The show is Canadian Invasion’s Kickstarter Fundraising Campaign Party in support of their upcoming album. The night will feature the world premiere of a satirical movie about the band by Melinda the Martian as well as a set of new songs by from their forthcoming album due out Spring 2011. Both Golden Bloom and Canadian Invasion are known for socially conscious, catchy pop, so audiences are guaranteed a fun, high energy show.

Golden Bloom and Neutral Uke Hotel Join CMJ for Show at Cameo Gallery

Shawn Fogel will once again be bringing two projects to the same stage: the sparkling power pop of Golden Bloom and the fun audience-uniter, Neutral Uke Hotel. Both bands will play a showcase at The Cameo Gallery on October 21st as part of CMJ’s Music Marathon and Film Festival which takes over New York from October 19th through October 23rd. Robbers on High Street and Pearl and the Beard will also play. This year’s festival features hundreds of musical acts including: Phoenix, Surfer Blood, Two Door Cinema Club, School of Seven Bells, Justin Townes Earle, Black Label Society, Four Tet, The Drums, and many more.

Golden Bloom is Shawn Fogel’s soaring vocals, shimmering guitar hooks; whizzing keyboards and twinkling sounds. In fact, Golden Bloom is all Shawn Fogel, at least for the purposes of recording. The CMJ showcase will feature one of the many configurations of musicians that is the live line-up of Golden Bloom. The band has been rapidly adding to the impressive list of bands he’s played with recently. They’ve done shows with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Hey Marseilles, Telekinesis and Sea Wolf in the past few months.

Celebrating its 30th year, CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival is headquartered this year at New York University’s Greenwich Village campus and dozens of downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn venues. CMJ, New York City’s largest music festival, brings together more than 120,000 music fans, music business professionals, college radio tastemakers, press, artists, filmmakers, and industry icons. Artists from more than 30 international territories are expected to partake in CMJ Music Marathon 2010, from Australia to Japan and everywhere in between.

Hüsker Dü’s Grant Hart, Kaisercartel And Golden Bloom Play Middle East On September 29th

Sharing the stage once with one of Hüsker Dü’s founding members is something to be proud of, but twice in the same week, well that’s just plain awesome. Such is the life of multi-instrumentalist Shawn Fogel, the front-man and mastermind of Golden Bloom, who will be playing two shows with ex- Hüsker Dü member, Grant Hart: September 26th at Philadelphia’s World Cafe Live and September 29th at Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. Brooklyn’s KaiserCartel will be joining Golden Bloom and Hart for the Middle East show.

Golden Bloom is Shawn Fogel’s soaring vocals, shimmering guitar hooks; whizzing keyboards and twinkling sounds. In fact, Golden Bloom is all Shawn Fogel, at least for the purposes of recording. The Middle East show will give audiences a chance to see him solo, too. He has been rapidly adding to his impressive list of bands he’s played with recently to include Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Hey Marseilles, Telekinesis and Sea Wolf.

Fogel is back in the studio with Peter Katis (Frightened Rabbit, The National, Interpol and Tokyo Police Club), to produce some tracks on the follow up to Fan the Flames, which was compared favorably to Summerteeth-era Wilco, The New Pornographers, and Big Star and loved by critics and fans alike. He’s has also been busy with Neutral Uke Hotel, a side project that has been taking the world by storm with live performances of Neutral Milk Hotel’s In the Aeroplane Over The Sea which is played entirely on ukulele.
Grant Hart is best known as being a founding member of Hüsker Dü. His latest album Hot Wax is his first solo studio album in 10 years. KaiserCartel is made up of Courtney Kaiser and Benjamin Cartel. Their latest album Secret Transit is full of delicate and sensual but nonetheless punchy folk-pop.
