The Morning Code Plays Arlene’s Grocery March 11th

You can’t go wrong with a perfect formula. The Morning Code takes their cues about rock music from the greats of 90s rock, and serves them up for audiences to enjoy. “At our shows you can expect a sound which is driven by the timeless ingredients to great rock music: a passionate performance, big guitars, and big drums,” says Ashwin Alexander. They’ll bring their recipe for a great show to Arlene’s Grocery on March 11th.

High Five! from The Morning Code's Ashwin Alexander

The following are five (of the many) things which have led me to be where I am today as a musician. These things enable and inspire me to write and perform as part of an indie band. Being in a band is tough, so any inspiration or help along the way is priceless.

1. Band Class

As a student, my band class looked something like this - I played trumpet. I later taught myself to play guitar, but the musical fundamentals and discipline that band class gave me were irreplaceable.

2. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails

NIN aren't my favorite group (they're close, but the Smashing Pumpkins take the top spot), but Trent Reznor is definitely my musical role model. The way that he took risks, maintained artistic control, and ultimate succeeded with his musical career was phenomenal.

3. The Fender Stratocaster

Why do I pick the Strat? Because a kid can buy a used Fender Stratocaster for a hundred bucks and a professional musician can spend a few thousand on one if he wants to. Having a timeless, versatile tone allows a musician to grow up with a Strat, which isn’t true of the 2nd most famous guitar, the Les Paul. The Les Paul is no doubt a great instrument, but not a very accessible one.

4. DIY Audio Production

Digital music production has come a long way from that picture below. The fact that a musician can buy a couple thousand dollars worth of equipment and (with the right knowledge) be able to make a great sounding album or demo is insane. The type of technology that was impossible even 10 years ago has broken down a major barrier for many indie bands…now artists can make their own records!

5. iTunes

With itunes and digital music as the norm for music listeners, any indie artist can have their music available globally for around $40 or less. This concept is nothing short of revolutionary.

Tell Someone! The Morning Code to Release New Ep March 1st

Inspired by the kings of 90s rock, The Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead, NYC’s The Morning Code strive for moments of emotional crescendo in their songs and achieve them on their latest EP Tell Someone. Tell Someone captures The Morning Code’s commitment to emotive melody, deep texture and as front man Ashwin Alexander puts it: “We write music to try and achieve that perfect musical crescendo and climax that [we] also look for in the music [we] listen to.” When listening to the magnetic pull of “Silver”, it’s apparent why one would compare the band’s music to that of Silversun Pickups, but it’s the channeling of The Smashing Pumpkins that mostly infiltrates their music. Driving, propulsive guitar lines around vocals that scale the infinite walls, the band pushes the realm of the music with a guiding light. On “New City”, the constant grind of the guitar paints a darkened sludge that provides an overall booming sound. The Morning Code resides in the enviable place that perfectly balances the power of strong storytelling and a gripping melody.

The Morning Code started out as Ashwin Alexander’s vision. After the release of 2007’s Superhero Complex, Alexander realized that he’d need a full band to complete the vision. Eric Vydel (guitar) and Doug Parsons (drums) joined the lead singer and songwriter to flesh things out for live shows. The band knows that they’ve got what it takes, in talent as work ethic. “It takes a huge amount of dedication and hard work,” notes Alexander; luckily, they obviously possess the essential tools needed in any successful outfit. Tell Someone is evidence of how far The Morning Code has come in three years, here’s to spreading the word.
