Gwyneth & Monko Announce January and February Dates in Support of Self-Titled Release

Gwyneth and Monko announce January and February tour dates in support of their self-titled release due out February 15, 2011. With a voice that invokes Jenny Lewis’ solo work crossed with the intimate folk of Gillian Welch; Gwyneth Moreland strums her guitar in subtle chords while Michael Monko accompanies her lyrical stories with trickling mandolin, steady acoustic guitar and folk accents.

The new record, which was recorded at Old School Studio in Caspar, CA, will more accurately reflect what the duo sounds like live. And it’s no wonder their new work sounds this way, as they’ve been on the road for most of 2010, taking weekends here and there to record. Guest artists Scott Southard on bass, Jimmy Gallagher on drums and Matt Cooper Borkenhagen on pedal steel and dobro, join Gwyneth and Monko on their self-titled album.

This record exists in part because of a month of creative exploration. In July, Gwyneth Moreland and Michael Monko spent time honing new songs in a home recording studio. Those sketches came to life in Old School Studio and are filled with new elements: Moreland on banjo, Monko on fiddle and guest artists adding drums and bass. These additions allow Gwyneth and Monko to explore a different dynamic while still keeping the old-timey and Americana influences, songwriting style, Moreland’s vocal style and Monko’s intricate instrumentation.

Gwyneth and Monko tour across the country in an RV that serves as a temporary home on the road. The phrase “less is more,” couldn’t be more apt for Gwyneth & Monko. “We travel in a camper van that has a sink, cook top, and refrigerator,” says Gwyneth. “We both love to travel and so we view touring as away to do all our favorite things: playing music and traveling.”

The Handsome Family Take the Show on the Road this January

When you’ve recorded eight studio albums over fifteen years, there’s bound to be songs that have been forgotten. The Handsome Family has revisited their past and gathered up these treasures; a smattering of covers, alternate takes, unreleased songs and bits of their history and put them together on the self-released Scattered: A Further Collection of Lost Demos, Orphaned Songs and Odd Covers which the band will support with a tour beginning in early January.

Fans of Rennie and Brett Sparks’ haunting and hauntingly beautiful stories in song will be delighted to know that they’re in for a double treat: The Handsome Family will be touring the west coast and they’ll have copies of Scattered with them. The CD is only available at tour dates and on their website, http://www.handsomefamily.com. The tour, which begins in Vancouver January 19th, will take them down the west coast to Santa Monica.

Scattered collects moments from The Handsome Family’s history and pre-history. A four-track demo of “One Way Up,” which appears on the album, was recorded in the Sparks’ tiny Chicago living room twenty years ago. Alternate takes, rehearsal tapes and orphaned songs keep company with covers the band has recorded for compilations over the years. “Little Buddy,” which Rennie describes as “one of our earliest attempts at songwriting,” was rescued from obscurity to be included. A cover of Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues,” was which was originally recorded for the Uncut Magazine compilation, Highway 61 Revisited Revisited as well as The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” recorded for Mojo’s Revolver Reloaded, are both included on the album. Covers of Leonard Cohen, Leon Payne and Harlan Howard also appear. There’s also traditional songs, like “The Lost Soul” of which Rennie says, “Hard to imagine, but they sang this terrifying song in church.”

The Handsome Family have toured extensively throughout the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, their live performances sometimes consist of up to a six-piece band and other times just Brett and Rennie. Despite the dark mood often created by their music, A Handsome Family show is fun, with Rennie bantering and telling more stories between songs, and Brett collapsing the illusion of tradition by sometimes using a laptop for drums.

The Handsome Family are known for Rennie’s evocative, descriptive lyrics, Brett’s deadpan baritone and their sparse, traditional bluegrass instrumentation. Their work has garnered praise from Pitchfork, Billboard, Spin, The BBC, Mojo and more. Their songs have been covered by many artists, most notably: Andrew Bird, Christy Moore, Cerys Matthews, The Sadies and Sally Timms. Honey Moon, the Sparks’ eighth studio album was released in 2009 to celebrate their 20th year of marriage.

The White Ravens Tour East Coast

Ann Arbor's The White Ravens keep getting hotter.....and we don't just mean this 90 degree weather. We couldn't be happier to announce that the duo is set for their first out-of-state tour in late August/early September. Joining siblings William and Amy Bennett, are drummer, Vince Russo, and guitarist, Andrew Brown.

The band does have plenty of shows under their belts, though. In May, the siblings played on Canada’s Breakfast Television, a morning show seen all over Canada. A White Ravens show is energetic, designed to get people to move, and the best way to do that is to set an example. With Amy’s spirited vocals and impressive bass runs, and Will’s fingers flying over the keys with maniacal speed and precision, it’s hard to resist the urge to bop along. And why should you?
The White Ravens’ latest release, Gargoyles and Weather Vanes is filled with catchy indie pop gems like “Sparks,” which happens to repeat on my iPod a lot these days, and it's video is just as interesting and vivacious as the song itself.

The White Ravens Tour Dates
8/28/10 Raven Lounge, Philadelphia, PA
8/29/10 Arlene’s Grocery, New York, NY
8/30/10 The Living Room, New York, NY
8/31/10 The Space, Hamden, CT
9/2/10 All Asia, Cambridge, MA
9/3/10 Campfire Festival, Cambridge, MA

Neutral Milk Fans Not Afraid to Sing-along - Neutral Uke Hotel Announces Six City Tour in June

Neutral Uke Hotel will bring their unique pop spin to Neutral Milk Hotel’s In The Aeroplane Over the Sea – by playing on ukulele on a six-city tour.

It took just one show by Neutral Uke Hotel to blossom into an in-demand tour. Golden Bloom front man Shawn Fogel (you should probably know his name by now, considering he's got so much going on that it offers an almost endless stream of things to write about), has sparked Neutral Milk Hotel fans into a frenzy with the announcement of a June Uke tour, beginning with a June 15 date at the Mercury Lounge in New York with The Handsome Family. Even Fogel can't believe it (look at that picture, hah)!

“It’s one of my favorite records ever, and the album doesn’t just have fans. The people who love that album are obsessed with it…. The goal of the project: [is] to strip these songs down and get people in a room to share their love for this album,’’ Fogel says.

Website Mango Nebula attended that now-famous first Neutral Uke Hotel show at The Armory. They described the show in great detail to make us all jealous and were able to capture some quotes from Fogel. "At the very end, Fogel encouraged the audience to meet each other saying, 'You now know you all have at least one thing in common.' As the audience was filtering out, he sat down with his band mates and the acoustic loop opener, Daniel Harris, to tell the stories of how they each found Neutral Milk Hotel, which after a while eerily started to sound like recalling first sexual encounters. The group planned to have the show be only a one night event, but the response has been so overwhelming that they booked a small east coast tour."

Neutral Uke Hotel Tour Dates:

6/15/10-Mercury Lounge – New York (w/The Handsome Family)

6/16/10-The Rongovian Embassy to the USA, Trumansburg, NY

6/18/10-The Painted Lady, Toronto (NXNE)

6/20/10-Mohawk Place- Buffalo, NY

6/23 - Acoustic Cafe - Bridgeport, CT

6/22/10 - The Khyber - Philadelphia, PA

6/25/10 - The Basement - Northhampton, MA
