GLG Fresh Mp3 Friday: The Roots of Indie Music

Martin Luther King Day takes America back to one of the civil rights pioneers. Similarly, GLG would like to take you back to the roots of indie music by featuring free Mp3 downloads of our favorite indie tracks for the week.

The class of musicians known as “Indie” are pioneers as they are independent from major commercial record labels. For the most part, they do their own recordings, publishing and performances.

Traveling back into the 1960s, bands like “Velvet Underground,” who did everything on their own, can be considered a real “indie” band. Indie music emerged with songs inspired by peace, love and anti-war thoughts. The recipe for Indie Music: half cup of pop, mixed with a bit of rock and roll, and a hint of R&B.

The 1970s experimented with the originality of music. Garage bands grew in the 1980s, as “alternative music” grew. The 90s seemed to reshape its traditions of originality as they signed onto major record labels and became “a missing link between modern music.” In the late 1990s, indie music went back to basics, returning to the core values of indie music’s roots.

John Shipe Reunites with Former Band Mates, The Renegade Saints, for Portland Record Release

John Shipe, purveyor of character-centric folk in the melodic vein of artists like Jonathan Rice and Elvis Costello, will play The Dublin Bar on December 10th to celebrate the local release of his latest album, Villain. Joining him will be Mexican Gunfight, a band which features Shipe’s band mates from The Renegade Saints. Fans of the Renegade Saints can look forward to a reunion of sorts, as they all share the stage again. This will be one of four shows in the area where Oregonian fans will be able to get their hands on Shipe’s latest album in advance of the national release on February 1, 2011. Eugene, Salem and Bend will also have dates.

Shipe’s live shows are intimate and engaging. He talks to the audience about the songs he’s playing, “Like a magician explaining the trick as he performs it,” he says. His songs are perfect for live performance, with their well-drawn characters and quirky humor. He has shared the bill with quite a few big names over the years, including Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, and Los Lobos just to name a few.

GLG Fresh MP3 Friday

NEW THIS WEEK:
John Shipe received “4 out of 5 stars” from Maverick on his previous release. From his new album, Villain, “Lion" sounds like the shining sun coming through in the morning. For the most significant forces in all of Shipe’s music have to be his foundation in the roots of rock and the irresistible tunefulness of his approach.

Enjoy Your Pumas sound is akin to Metric's Emily Haines fronting Bloc Party. Their energetic live show has received accolades from fans and music journalists alike.

Both are the latest addition to GLG and will be dropping albums on the same day!
