Interview with Grand Atlantic from Delusions of Adequacy

Always on top of things, webzine Delusions of Adequacy recently interviewed Grand Atlantic front man Phil Usher. In the revealing interview, journalist Bryan Sanchez talked to Usher about the singer's personal struggles and how they influenced the band's latest release How We Survive.

"I sort of struggled with clinical depression the last five or so years and I guess for me, writing music has become an outlet for things I see going on in my life and what I see in others’ lives," Usher admitted to the website. "I think it comes down to the fact that it’s not easy being an adult in the 21st century and I think the album is sort of about that."

In the personal Q&A, Usher also tells us which five albums have had the largest influence on him. Nice choices! They include:
The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
Nirvana – Nevermind
The Beatles – Magical Mystery Tour
The Warlocks – Phoenix Album
The Rolling Stones – Goat Heads Soup Click Here to Read More..

D.I.Y. Music Support, No Second Troy Raise Funds for Recording

No Second Troy has been hard at work finishing up a new album. As an independent band, like so many others out there, the group has to dip into their own funds to record and release their music.

It's become common place these days for bands to record albums at their "home studio" instead of the more expensive option of an outside recording studio. With home computers' constantly evolving and innovative music programs like Pro Tools and GarageBand are available to bands at a reasonable cost, groups are able to save some money by recording albums themselves. On their own time, but on their own dime. This however has shown a decline in revenue for independent recording studios. It's a good/bad situation to have, depending on who you are....

However, No Second Troy are one of those bands that is really in between. Both musically and financially. Their pop music is lovely indie pop that teeters on what could be close to mainstream. To make their music more accessible and cleaner, the band chose to record in an outside studio, so they laid down tracks at Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA with producer Chad Clark.

While the studio's equipment adds to the sound of a band like No Second Troy, which could help to get to them to a more mainstream audience, it doesn't mean they can afford the same kind of studio time as The Fray. So in a growing new field, NST are using the Internet to raise money from fans and supporters in order to pay for the studio time. If you go to their website you can donate specific amounts of money, and in return, not only are you helping the band get their music out, but you could also score the following with your donation :

$50 signed album w/ personal note from band
$100 -- Signed album + Signed & framed poster
$250 -- Signed album + Signed & framed live photo
$500 -- Signed album + Private NST performance

Finding a niche for this type of fundraising, the website Kickstarter.com is becoming all the rage for raising money for artists, musicians, journalists, filmmakers, etc.. If you're looking to raise money to fund your band's tour or recording, or your small company, etc., this is the website to use.

On KickStarter, you set a financial goal, get backers and have a designated date to reach that goal. It's amazing how many people will offer to help out others' creative endeavors. The creators keep 100% ownership of their funded work and Kickstarter only asks for 5% from the project creator if a project is successfully funded.

Their website states: "Kickstarter is a new form of commerce and patronage, not a place for investment or lending. Project creators inspire people to open their wallets by offering products, benefits and fun experiences."

In July Polyvinyl Records set up a Kickstarter account to raise money to "Save 10,000 Records From Destruction." They set a goal of $1,000 and actually raised $15,626!

They asked for support to indie music fans. " Polyvinyl needs your help! Some of our distributor's warehouses around the world are being downsides or consolidated and we either need to destroy over $10,000 records or face some high storage costs. Destroying the records is not an option (it’s too wasteful and besides, these are great records, they’re just overstocked)! Storing the records at our warehouse is not an option (we cannot afford the storage costs). So to keep them from destruction, we’re hoping to have all the records shipped back to our office."

It worked out better then expected for Polyvinyl and is helping out dozens upon dozens of musicians and artists.

So get out there and support your fellow artists, your favorite band, or maybe this will finally give you the "kick start" you need to start your own project. Pun intended.

The Motion Sick's Michael Epstein in new duo Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling

Boy/Girl duos seem to be all the rage these days: She and Him, GLG's own Naked Hearts, and now Michael Epstein, lead singer for The Motion Sick, is joining this growing trend. And we like this trend...if that's what it is.

For this new venture Epstein puts down the guitar and takes up the bass alongside his own darling, singer/drummer Sophia Cacciola, for the duo Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling.

This is no ordinary album or band; its references to a cult British television series will mostly likely be lost on Americans, but it's still marvelous music, even if you don't exactly know what spies they're singing about. Epstein and Cacciola have found an innovative way to put the classic sci-fi drama The Prisoner (which was only on TV from 19670 - 1968) into a musical form on their debut EP, The New Number 2. Two words. Awe-some.

The Boston Globe recently interviewed Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling about their new EP, and their admiration for the bizarre TV show they have based this project around. Read the entire interview, with both members, on The Boston Globe's website. On the duo's site you can check out the hard-rocking track "Episode 1: The Arrival."

I mean really, how can you go wrong with songs about a British secret agent? Click Here to Read More..

Haunting at Southgate House this Thursday

Back in the day, I got to see a lot of shows at the Southgate House in Cincinnati. The main one that sticks in my mind is right after 9/11 when Julian Casablancas of The Strokes was drunkenly sprawled across the stage while singing "Last Night". That's what you call rock'n'roll.

That's why this post about Southgate House on Milk Milk Lemonade caught my attention.

You see, in addition to being an amazing place to see a show,Southgate House is this unbelievable statue in history. Milk Milk Lemonade gives a brief insight into the history, "Built two years after the war of 1812 by British prisoners, this beautiful home was once visited by soon-to-be President Abraham Lincoln and later the birthplace of John Tariaferro Thompson, inventor of the 'Tommy Gun'. Since that time, the original structure has been converted into a multi-stage music venue including a cozy lounge, substantial ballroom, intimate second floor parlour and third floor art gallery to compliment most any type of event." Rumor has it, the place is haunted as well. And I love a good ghost story. HauntedHouse.com reported, "Besides hearing a musical entity playing the piano when the living are far from it, the man's laughter, and the knocking on the walls, many people on the staff have heard the mumbling of disembodied voices." Chilling.

If you want a haunting without the fear of the ghostly figure, be sure to check out the rich haunting vocals of Leopold and His Fiction at Southgate House this Thursday, April 8th and head to HauntedHouse.com to determine where to avoid the ghostly beings while you are there.(For the record, I've never seen a ghost myself while I was there). An exclusive unreleased tour single of "Golden Friends" from the upcoming Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Little Joy, Vetiver) produced album will be available at the show. Tickets are $5 for 21+ / $8 for 18-20.

Alan Cohen Experience releases single "Einstein" from new album Space & Time

Alan Cohen Experience has released the first single “Einstein” from their newest album Space & Time, which was co-produced by Cohen himself and Tony Goddess of Papas Fritas.

Space & Time is a chapter-by-chapter musical interpretation of Stephen Hawking’s book “A Brief History in Time.” The track “Einstein” offers an upbeat, rock, pop, and blues mixture of genres that literally portrays the influence Albert Einstein had on the world of theoretical physics through lyrics such as “Einstein, he’s got a fine mind.” The end of the track becomes illuminated with a strong guitar solo and powerful drum beats that gives a surge of energy and gracefully blends the subjects of music and science.

Largehearted Boy leads the charge to making "Einstein" available. Visit their download page to download the track, and also check out the Alan Cohen Experience Media Page and the Alan Cohen Experience website for all your ACE needs. Click Here to Read More..

No Second Troy Announces Northeast Tour in May

Washington, DC’s own, No Second Troy, announces a northeast tour in May in support of the release of their album, Colors, on April 27, 2010. Following up their praised 2007 release Narcotic, Colors combines contemporary indie rock and the precise amount of infectious pop to be lively and bright, without being saccharine or lackluster.

No Second Troy garnered praise from SPIN while charting on the CMJ Top 200 on their last record, Narcotic. On the upcoming release, Colors, the band was led to Inner Ear Studios where they worked with Chad Clark of Silver Sonya Studios (Fugazi, Q & Not U, Georgie James), TJ Lipple and Nick Anderson to produce and engineer the record. Lead singer Jeff Wharen notes, "We really liked Chad and TJ's vision of capturing the band's sound at its most authentic - moving away from digital editing and auto-tuning, while recording drums and bass on tape, and encouraging the band to just sound like itself, rather than trying to sound like something we think might be a critical success. We also liked Chad's commitment to mixing the songs based on what they were about, pairing the aesthetics of the musical and the lyrical."

During their week at SXSW in Austin, our favorite Aussies Grand Atlantic played a live version of Alex Chilton's "September Gurls" during their set at Sonny's Vintage on March 18 (the day after Chilton passed away) and we've got it on video! Yeah! The video consists of the band performing the song live mixed in with random video footage of the group, turning it into a short film-style video. Enjoy!

Addicted to technology? Yeah we are too.

Can you walk out the door without your iphone or blackberry? Do you need to check your email a hundred times a day? Now we have the ipad to the fuel the addiction. Yeah, it is a bit out of control but we still do it, don't we? San Francisco quartet Midnight Strangers couldn't have made the point more clear than they did with their short film/video  for their contemporary new-wave influenced track "The Future of Humanity."

The Future Of Humanity from Midnight Strangers on Vimeo.

If you live in the Bay Area, celebrate the release of their new album Days of Decadence with the CD release party, Saturday, April 17th at the Hemlock Tavern in their hometown.

Neo-new wave guitar rock with hints of electronics and synths, Midnight Strangers are building a fanbase of ears akin to the Killers, but with a more streamlined pop sensibility. Lead singer Chris Swimley has built a name for himself for previous albums, even earning "Best Male Alternative Vocalist of the Year" at the 2007 L.A. Music Awards. For his third solo album, he decided to bring in a band to make it a group effort. With Anthony Petrocchi on drums and Rob Pera on guitar, Midnight Strangers' live shows are full of a visceral vibe you'll bop to. Click Here to Read More..
