Absolute Punk Interviews David Gergen

With influences like Wilco, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, and The Rolling Stones, David Gergen talks about his music and answers random questions with AbsolutePunk.

Why should people listen to your band?
They should listen if they want music that has a lot going on underneath the surface. Lyrically and musically, I try and create original pieces of work that force the listener to pay attention. I don't view my music as easily digestible pop candy, it's deeper and more thought provoking. So, for people that like that, I welcome you into my world.

If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would they be and why?
I think as far as a good fit for touring together I would pick someone similar to my vibe, probably Wilco, maybe Arcade Fire. I would love to play with Johnny Cash but that won't happen until we meet in the afterlife.

What is something that most fans don't know about you?
That I am into cooking. I love to cook... Thai, Italian, French. I am fascinated by food the same way as I am music. It's never ending and there are certain basic rules that you need to understand before you can break down the door and go in a new direction, so I love that it requires a lot of practice and can't be faked.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Cook, hike, travel, take a long drive somewhere random....hang with animals. I do love movies too.

Staff Infection: Avett Brothers

For my first stab at Staff Infection, I think I should let you know about the various ways I listen to music on a daily, if not weekly basis. This may explain why my lists aren't always going to be cohesive or may seem randomly chaotic. Well, that's because, I'd say in an average week I listen to '60s & '70s vinyl albums 30%, my iPod on shuffle with new and older music 40%, Top 40 radio, %10 (I'm a pop-culture junkie who needs to know what's hot for the masses, and well, I have a problem: I'm a little addicted to tween pop), and brand new mp3s on the Internet, 20%. Actually it's more like 39%...... that adds up to more than 100% of music-listening percentage, but hey, that's what we do here.

That being said, we all know that The Rolling Stones recently released the documentary Stones in Exile and reissued their infamous (and my favorite) album Exile on Main St. I know, I know, Mick Jagger recorded some new vocals, but it's not the end of the world because we are also given some great outtakes. Thanks to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for showing the documentary, btw. After listening to a lot of Stones lately, I went back and fell in love with The Avett Brothers all over again. Oh, and some folks I know recently put out albums and I finally got a chance to hear them. Only one of these songs made me cry this week.

The Rolling Stones, "Loving Cup (Alternate Version)" from Exile on Main St. (Reissue)

The Avett Brothers, "January Wedding" from I and You and Love

Graham Nash, "Sleep Song" from Songs for Beginners

Matt Pond PA, "Specks" from The Dark Leaves

K-Os "Tom Sawyer," from Live show at The Gramercy Theatre (a good friend plays guitar on this Rush smash-up. I heard them play it live, opening for big-time rapper Drake and it ruled.)

LCD Soundsystem, "Dance Yrself Clean" from This Is Happening

Every week a different Green Light Go staff member will write about what bands have infected their ears for the week and give you an opportunity to hear it for yourself.

This week: Shannon McCarthy, Green Light Go Writer/Blogger-in-Chief

Beatles Vs. Rolling Stones w/ The True Jacqueline

It may not not Halloween, but on Thursday, May 27 at the Sierra Grille in Northampton, MA, The True Jacqueline will be emoting the essence of The Beatles. In an event aptly titled The Age Old Question: Beatles or Stones, almost a dozen bands will play 15 minute sets of songs by either The Beatles or The Rolling Stones in a battle for a winner. We don't think there will be a winner, but it sounds like a fun night.

The True Jacqueline will tackle iconic Beatles' songs "Golden Slumbers," "Carry that Weight," and "Don't Let Me Down."

"Last time, it was a David Bowie / Velvet Underground show, where we played "Changes" by Bowie and "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground," singer/guitarist Noah Stevralia shared with us. "This one is more of a friendly competition to decide who is the better band, the Beatles or the Stones. I'm firmly in the camp of the former."

P.S. This battle will never end. I mean, can you really choose one? I wonder if there will be trash talk?
